Color Conversions Tip Improves Bounce Rate

I have several sites that I make minor adjustments to every several weeks. Most of them are wordpress sites that are converted to mini sites.

I remember reading an article a few months back on how color can improve conversions. I never thought that it may play a factor in bounce rate.

I have one site that gets several hundred hits a day but with a bounce rate that has remained at 51-52%. That is not good at all. I you are not familiar with bounce rate wikipedia it.

I made one simple change. After reading that the colors orange or red can create action I changed the bar at the top of my site from black to orange. This changed my bounce rate to 45-46%. I have made no other changes. The products I sell are very niche. I know that bounce rate still not the best.

My average time on site went from about 3:31 to 4:19 and instead of 2.95 pageviews overage it is now at 3.45 pageviews.

Does anyone else have anything to add in the way of color tips?

  I have tried blue in the past yes it is a color of trust but I am seeing a big improvement with orange. It is the same orange and a similar bar that you would see on the top page of google analytics.

  We use a "burnt orange" color for our "add to cart" buttons and it works the best.

Yeah you just have to be careful how much of it you use, and which shade. Too much of some shades of orange end up giving the viewer a headache

  I have only converted one bar above the fold much like the google analytics page. I will probably add more to see what happens.

  #FF6D06 is the color I am using.I may try blue for comparison and risk a few sales but I am in it for the long haul.

  Using the FF plugin colorzilla that color comes up as #F07800

  I read about this color for order buttons, from either Michael Campbell or marketing sherpa, can't remember.
  
  This color seems to attract attention/stand out without hurting your eyes.

Interesting results. I'm pretty lazy so I hardly ever test my conversion rates, but I think the next split test I do will involve the color orange!

  I am trying blue as we speak but orange seems to be out performing by about 15%. Remember I have only changed one element a bar across the top of the site. I think I will try the blue for about a week and go back to orange.
  
  I really wonder if this would vary across products sold and demographics!

I have amazon type buttons on my online shop, they are orange, just now thought about it. Never thought about color of the buttons till now. Some more evidence, a big retailer using the color.

  One emotion the color orange can support is "value"
  
  Different colors can support different feelings. I'm pretty sure yellow supports hunger, that's why fast food joints use it. Some fast food joints will use yellow and orange. Hunger and value.
  
  On an another topic, smells work in retail stores. Vanilla is the best, it supports happiness and feeling good.
