Is GoDaddy gouging with the "Private" fee?

Lately I have been registering my new domains with 1and1 rather than Godaddy where I still have numerous domains still. This is becuase I have become more wary (irked?) of the PRIVATE fee GoDaddy charges, which 1and1 provides for free.

Is there really a cost for this (for them) when they register my domain, or is it just gravy for them on the sale? I mean the PRIVATE fee basically doubles your domain cost, even on renewals. Just want to be sure I am not missing something here.

Yes I consider that a gouge. I stick with Namecheap. I bought a domain for a pretty low price recently but only because I know I will later transfer to Namecheap.

For the first year. You do notice it when you renew, though, as you say!

Alexa consider Namecheap. Much better control panel, no ads at every turn and last I did any registration privacy guard was free. Never had to pay for it with any domain I have registered.

I'm about to renew my domain name (its too late to renew it and transfer it to namecheap)

I do not like having to pay for the private registration fee and the higher per domain fee that Godaddy charges, while namecheap provides both for less than HALF and I also to wade through the endless sales pitches ARRRGH!

  Some airlines charge a fee for selecting a seat online, while others don't. I don't
  really know if those that charge do incur a cost for not doing it for free like the
  others do, though they're certainly free to put a price tag if it works for them.
  
  IMHO it depends on the provider's business model. Makes one glad there's galore

I wouldn't touch Godaddy domains with a 10ft pole. At least 80% of my domains are registered through Netfirms who offers free privacy/WHOIS protection and .com TLDs at $6....can't beat that!

Hi,

I used to be a royal customer of Godaddy but now started to buy domain from Netfirms.

It's true you can have a domain (plus free private) at lower cost compared to what u get at Godaddy, but i'm not sure how easy to transfer any domain to others at Netfrims (this is crucial for those flipping website).

Is it free for anybody to create user account at Netfirms (like what we have at Godaddy and Namecheap)?

I tried to ask their support team but they keep providing wrong information when responding to my question.

Do u have any idea/experience?

Godaddy also gouges on email. 1 email address per domain. Buy 100 for a yearly price ($29.xx ??) Talk about gouging. 1and1 give 1500 email address for their "cheap" home domain.

I register all of my domains with GoDaddy. I'm a domain club member and have hundreds registered there. I also have lots at Namecheap, but I don't bother with NC any longer, I much prefer GoDaddy. I also stopped doing private registrations some time ago. It just isn't worth it, and in some cases it can hurt your credibility.

yes, you're spot on - i've switched to 1and1 for the same reason. that saves you about half the cost per domain - per year!

I must say, the upsells that come up when I renew the same domains I've had for 10 years are ridiculous. I wish they had a no b.S one click button. Obviously I dont want their overpriced hosting and crappy wysiwyg html editor for the 100'th time. What the deuce?
