Default A pudding of a puzzle...

I think I need some inspiration!

A few years ago we had some friends to dinner and I made my favorite dessert: Summer Pudding.

Although I say it myself, it was delicious and they asked for the recipe.

Being 'Internetty' I made another one, photographed the process and put up a very quick and dirty webpage for my friend to see.

I wasn't trying to impress or to sell anything, so the page is what it is - basic and a bit ugly.

I stuck it on my kickstartdaily domain just for someplace to stick it and prompty forgot all about it.

It isn't a domain I use much myself any more, so I haven't checked the stats for ages but a couple of days ago I did - and was astounded!

According to AWStats the page Summer Pudding Recipe received over 3000 visitors last month and almost all came via Google using the search term 'summer pudding recipe'. And that kind of high traffic has been pretty consistent for months!

Oddly, when I search Google using that phrase I am on page 9 of the search results - hardly a position you'd expect to get that kind of traffic from.

On this basis I plan to smarten up the page a bit and add AdSense to it (and maybe an exit pop offering a subscription to my newsletter - although recipe traffic isn't a great fit). I also plan to link to one or two other recipe pages I've created for friends (banoffee pie and giant blueberry muffins).

Does anyone have any other ideas of ways I can capitalize on this unexpected windfall?

Martin

You could add affiliate products for food & recipes and start selling them on your website.

I have a recipe book "What's for afters" should have an affiliate program for it, need to get that done if it helps.

Seriously the Yanks love our British afters, even if we do use phrases they have no idea about.

Funny you should pop in Pearson because you were at the dinner when JF asked for the recipe!

Hi Martin

Next time you're down the shops look at the magazine take a look at how many cookery magazines are available, and jot down the url's of the magazines. Check out how much they charge for advertisers, and then you know how much your traffic could be worth.

Online advertising opportunities | delicious. Magazine food articles & advice

Also I'm sure that CPA offers are available, but I don't know where to start looking.

With 3,000 vists per month I'm sure it will make you enough cash to eat out once a month in a fancy resteraunt.

Hi Martin,

You could sell advertising space to one of the Pudding magazines maybe?

I'm sure there are also other affiliate programs and possible CPA offers you can use. What about putting products from Amazon on there? I was browsing the other day for a new video series and found some books on desserts and puddings - could be an ideal match?

Wishing you all the best

Jason

Martin, do you need any tasters for your banoffee pie, spotted dick, summer fruit puddings, apple and cheese pie, Eton mess, chocolate torte, maltessers cake?

I'm sure we are all willing to go to Sidcup for a cuppa and cake

Ooh! Eton Mess! I love that - but you hardly need a recipe!

Just throw some broken up merangue into a bowl with a dollop of whipped cream and some chopped strawberries and stir!

Divine.

Try a splash of white balsamic vinegar on
the strawbs before you add them. Really
boosts the flavour.

Give some fresh mint a good pounding in a pestle and mortar then add some granulated sugar. Give it a good stir. Dip your strawberry in the minted sugar mix and wash it down with a glass of Dom Perignon.

A great summer treat - shame it's autumn now though!

Martin,

In what's probably a futile attempt to get this
thread back on topic..

  • Place Adsense on page
  • Sell banner ads to relevant sites
  • Place an Amazon ad on the page
  • Look through ClickBank for relevant products
  • Use an exit pop and sell leads
  • Look for suitable CPA offers
  • Find PLR recipe book and offer it for sale
  • Leave it as it is ;-)

Anyway, much as I did try to start the thread on a serious marketing point, at least it has degenerated into a useful object lesson in transatlantic humour for our special-relationship cousins.

I see that as a public service, regardless of how messy Eton is or how spotted our dicks are.

Kim a friend of our had twins when she was in her early 50's

Changing the tone again, it's officially winter here in HK today, and it is 32C or 90F

You can't change spotted dick to spotted Richard, I mean who wants spotted Richard. Sultana sponge, don't they know the difference between a sponge and a suet pudding?

It's time for Jam Roly Poly then.

Eton Mess should have raspberries in it, but strawberries will do.

Martin, you just need to put nursery food there and you will be well away.

All this talk about puds, they are all comfort foods, and we love them.

Hey Becky,

Wow! How on Earth did that happen?

It just goes to show that you don't need a fancy webpage or a bunch of SEO to get a high ranking. Just content plain and simple.

I wonder why Google don't rate it so highly in the UK though?

Eating too much sugar will NOT make you diabetic. Sorry for going off topic but statements like that rankle with me - my daughter is type 1 insulin dependant diabetic, and it was not because she ate too much sugary crap or was overweight.

If you are really diabetic then you would know that you COULD eat all the crap you described as long as you take the correct amount of insulin to break down your sugar intake (not recommended though!)

I'm hoping that Martin won't mind me stating that he has type 2 diabetes (as I do myself). which is in our case late onset diabetes usually found in older people. Unfortunately lifestyle does factor a lot in type 2 diabetes which is where I would imagine Martin's remark was coming from.

People on type 2 diabetes are very often on oral medication or it can be controlled by changing your lifestyle, losing weight eating more healthily etc. For a lot of people developing type 2 is the wake up call they need to start changing their lifestyle habits. (ahem).

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has diabetes, but I would hazard a guess she has the juvenile type which is obviously (I think anyway) a lot more serious. As you know this has nothing to do with lifestyle as such but is an unfortunate chronic problem involving the pancreas etc.

She's lucky she can eat fairly normally and compensate with insulin. It's not that long ago she would have been forced onto a strictly controlled diet etc.

Advances in techniques for administering insulin are pretty cool now I hear, how does she manage with hers, I'd love to know

Regards
Kim

A home made video on the site would be a nice touch.

Edited to Add: I just checked Yahoo -- you have THE #1 position for that search phrase.
Well, I have almost *no* idea what you're talking about ... lol. Except that it's what passes for food, apparently yummy food, across the pond.

"summer pudding recipe" from Canada:
google: #8
yahoo: #1

You could always link to the julia and julia movie dvd, it's popular right now. Or a Julia Child cookbook. Or, if most of your searches are coming from North America, then something that would appeal to anglophiles or - wild guess here - it could be emigrants, even sons and daughters of war brides, trying to recreate childhood memories. That could take you in an interesting direction.

I just wish I had something degenerative to add to the discussion, but alas, aside from chip 'n egg, I have no first hand knowledge of your (ahem) cuisine.

Black pepper and vinegar on strawberries? What kind of messed up pallettes do you folks have!

There are only three things that should ever be put on strawberries:

Sugar
Cream
Chocolate

The rest is just wrong.

BBC - Food - Recipes: James' sticky toffee pudding is another sticky toffee recipe

Martin, if you have plain strawberries, you should put a little freshly ground black pepper over them, it brings out the flavour of them. All the top chefs in the UK do this.

Balsamic vinegar is also a must for strawberries and pineapple, but not so much you can taste it. You are looking to bring out the flavour, not drown the taste.

I'm not sure watching Martin botch it up would help at all lol.

Mind you we would be able to check whether he washes his hands or not.

Of course I wash my hands - whether they need it or not!

I took pictures for a new recipe that I devised: Spiced Apple Honey Loaf. I'll put up a web page for it soon - when I've finished eating!

Mmmm.

Hi Martin

Believe me some of the first page site are ugly. Yours give clear instructions - but how about numbering the steps. You never know when someone will get confused. LOL! A quick home video can also work.

Amazon seems to be the way to go - might just surprise you. Promoting kitchen gadgets to whip up these yummy puds can maybe do the trick as well as the
truckloads of recipe books available.

Have a look at tastebook.com./recipes - interesting concept for an optin email and nice layout.

I like the loose weight and abs ads - applicable after stuffing up.

Keep the recipes rolling!

Neither did I kim! My nan made this for years and it never had dates in it. Oh and no cream just home made custard and lashings of it over the top. Mmm...now I'm hungry.

Martin,
Do you eat this like fruit loaf and buttered? Sounds great!

With butter when it is warm, or like fruit cake when it is cold. Either way it's delicious!

I haven't written up the recipe yet, but here is how it looks when finished:
