Hi there, I wonder where IMs work from. I'll start the ball rolling and let you know I have a garden office, about 10ft by 8ft - with 2 macs, a PC, a green screen, lots of lights, and about 20 power sockets. Always untidy I'm afraid! It is 11 steps from my house, and too close. I actually miss the commute to work, or long haul flights on business trips. What about you? Richard |

I used to have an office about ten minutes away. It was great for getting big projects done, but for little stuff I found myself just not bothering. I've recently moved and now have a seperate room in my house for the office, but that's not really ideal for me either, I still end up leaving. After a certain point, you just have to slap yourself and get to work. |

I usually work in a public library or find some cozy restaurant to sit and start working. Its fun, sometimes you could meet some interesting ppl when u work outside an office.. Staying in the office all the time just not my style..

One thing I often recommend is creating a seperate work space so you really feel you are "At Work" when you are in that space. You also need an understanding family that appreciates the fact that when you are in that space you are "At Work". However, that being said, family relationships always come first when you work at home and it is very easy to get disconnected if you are not careful. I have ran my businesses from home for over 15 years and I am very lucky that I have a loving an supportive family that understands the boundaries of the work space I have created. If you are not able to dedicate a spare room to your office then working from a dedicated area like the Garage (converted for comfort) or a bedroom area will suffice. The key here is to have the mindset that when you cross theat threshold into your work area then you are working and getting things done. |

For me it is right smack dab in the middle of the living room. With 4 kids, this is good and this is bad, lol. They are usually pretty good about if I'm at the computer they know I'm working and unless it is an emergency not to bother me. But in the same sense, I'm right here so if they do need me for something. I'm hoping to soon set up my own 'office' space, but with younger children, I'm not sure about being shut in a room where I can't keep an eye on them. |

I have an office in a separate room in my home, the office space has it's own entry way and bathroom. My office hours coincide with my kids school hours. In the morning I take them to school, get my Starbucks and then go go work. When work is done I pick up the kids and go enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

I have a dedicated workspace in my home, but during the last few weeks I've found that if I get out for a few hours each day and work in a coffee shop, I am more cheerful and productive. My favorites are Romancing the Bean in Burbank, Aroma in North Hollywood, and The Coffee Table in Eagle Rock. |

Now THAT sounds like an idea. I want to get away from having to leave the house every day for my 50 mile one-way commute to work. However, I want a schedule that will allow me to get a lot of work done (my J-O-B schedule is ever-changing, so that makes it a bit more difficult). I don't want an office that's outside of my home, but I also want a real workspace as well. Quote:

AutoResponse Plus Towers is an office in a local business center. It's not far from my house - if a song is playing on the radio as I leave the car park, the same song is often still playing as I roll into my driveway! In the morning, I leave the house at the same time as the kids. I like the 'working day' routine and the separation between family life and business. I too (sometimes!) miss the business travel - a lot less, though, than I hated it when I HAD to do it! I also have an office in the house (where I'm typing this from) but I don't use it for business - it's mainly the kids' games/computer room now! Cheers, Neil |

I use my bathroom for an office. I just sit right down and do my business. I also have a little coffee maker in there so I'm good for the day. I find I do great work there and come up with my best ideas. The only problem I ever run into while working in the bathroom is when I run out of toilet paper. |

My newly redecorated home office is Zen mist light green with cherry wood furnishings, hardwood floors and "Z" my bamboo plant with 5 stalks (for prosperity, that's what the tag said). Several years ago I purchased a very expensive and wonderfully ergonomic desk chair which is worth the price. From one window I can see and hear birds at the feeder; relaxing. When my door is open, I can see thru the dining room to the pool patio. Since I live in Florida, I also work wireless at the pool to enjoy being outside. Having a "work" mindset makes it easier to work from home. I do like the freedom of working in casual clothes with my birds on my shoulders. They are wonderful working associates who literally work for peanuts. Otherwise my laptop is my "office" to meet with clients which I do at various Panera Bread free wifi sites around the area. Now Starbucks offers wifi with a card, so that expands my "satellite offices". |

I work in my living room, which is nice when the family is not around. Doesn't sound very professional when the baby is crying in the back round though. Had a customer ask me the other day when the baby was crying if that is my secretary. I told him she is my accountant. LOL. |

Three computers and three filing cabinets in a back bedroom, so that's the office. I sleep in one of the front bedrooms (when I do sleep!), so it's not too far to go from bed to office. Regards, Jeff. |

I use a spare upstairs bedroom in my townhouse as an office. It is outfitted with everything I need. Overlooks the pond and is very quiet/peaceful. I usually meet outside local clients at a nearby restaurant or Starbucks. _______ Bruce |

I have a room on a different level of the house overlooking a palm tree and the pool. It has a few desks, a few computers, a filing cabinet, bookshelves and some whiteboards. Don't miss the commute of the old job, and when I close the office door - work is done for the day.... Wouldnt have it any other way. |

I used to spend quite a bit of time working at the home office. But fairly recently it's all changed because I've chosen to be more mobile. So far this year I've worked at the beach, my bedroom, living room, 6 different sports bars, 14 different cafes, grandma's house, mom's house, Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, Coffee Bean, the girlfriend's house, a couple of pubs, and you get the picture. I vacation a lot in Mexico so about 2 months out of the year I'm down there goofing off and working. RoD |

I work in a 6000 sq ft warehouse (the rent is a killer). I'd love to move to smaller quarters, but there are complications. I tried to get DSL at home but I was too far from to phone companies office and seldom could get connected. They shut down the account and refunded my money. LOTS of wasted time on that one. |

I mostly sit here in my recliner with the laptop on my lap. When I am doing this (w/o my "work" job) full time I plan on having a dedicated office space, or a location nearby and outside the home (library?). I love my family but I can see my focus not being where it needs to be to get things done |
