When does outsourcing actually hurt you instead of help you?

I was going over some work I had outsourced, as I was sitting at my desk and while at the laundromat I was thinking, the amount time I spent going over the work and making all of the corrections and the turnaround time, I could have done it all myself and saved the money and did it without the corrections.

Sure, I can do other things while waiting but I do not start on other projects until the current project is finished.

This is one of those tmes in which I think I could saved time and money by doing it myself.

This is not always the case but in certain situations, I have felt like this before.

What are your thoughts?

    My Thoughts:

You hired the wrong person for the job, if your having to go over the work they did and make corrections then there are 2 problems actually...

1). Your instructions weren't clear to begin with!

2). You hired the wrong person for the job!

I hire 2 full time people and am about to hire 2 more by the end of the month and the only time i correct them is at the very start, it takes 2 minutes to correct them and make them do it they way i want them to and that's it!

Everytime after that its done correctly otherwise they know they will be fired!

to me - for outsourcing to work, you have to develop a relationship over time with the people you are going to use for different tasks.

Simply hiring someone one time will result in what you had happen in your post - confusion over what you want and how you want it.

Team Building - over time - works VERY well in the IM world. But it does take time and you have to make a lot of connections. When you find a "like minded" person, try to cultivate and nurture the relationship and then they will get to know you and what you want and expect.

Once you get one good person - they will be able to recommend others to help with projects.

    hope this helps

This was not a one time situation. I've been using this person for a while now, I am not sure what is going on but the quality not where it used to be.

Sometimes people can take on to much work load and therefore work can get rushed. It does happen.

I made the mistake of going to agents of value a couple of years ago and to be honest it was a complete and utter nightmare.

I ended up collecting my own team of people whom I could trust implicitly, I knew I never had to check the work they did mainly because they were more expert than me at what they did!

      Hi Kim

Your post is timely for me. I've been considering using AofV for a while, but I've heard good and bad. Can I ask where you ended up going to get your people?

      Thanks

    Just a little note here.

I often offer bonus's for good work if im going on a bigger project or something... that normally provides an incentive for anyone, enough to work harder and normally get the project done even quicker.

Same sort of idea on the paying 50% first and then the next 50% after as then they are willing to work to get the other 50% quicker and you can send it back and say no re-do it or whatever before you send over the last 50%.

I seem to have got unlucky in the past week with four people I've outsourced work to. The annoying this is that I've used all of them before with good results, now they're not delivering and not responding to messages.

Link building - disappeared because of family problems
Custom site creation - done half a job on one site, with improvements still to be done on two others. Previously completed work very quickly. Now extremely slow and not responding to emails
Social bookmarking - again, previously good, now all gone quiet
Article writing - very slow, quality has dropped dramatically

It's annoying because I was happy that I was building up a network of specialists that all complimented each other, but the delays have a knock on effect on each of the other services, and I'm now spending the time doing things to compensate for the delays. Which kind of defeats the object of outsourcing!

Maybe I've just got unlucky in the past couple of weeks, but I do wish people would be reliable and deliver what they say they're going to.
