Default reverse engineering the "ps3 hdmi cable" example

Hello, I am beginner trying to reverse engineer niche examples. After reading Frank Haywood's excellent post "How To Find Hot Niches With Dead Simple Market Research", I tried to recreate his process using Market Samurai (which I own).

In Frank's example, he finds the potential niche "ps3 hdmi cable", which has about 500K competing pages. In the Market Samurai literature and videos, I think they say to target niches with 10K,30K, or at most 50K competing pages. I am looking for niches with less than 30K competing pages, so I would not have considered "ps3 hdmi cable" to be possible at 500K.

Frank posted:

"But let's see how much competition there really is in terms of how many pages we're up against.

Okay, 1.67 million competing pages in the UK. I can beat that with a little bit of effort.

Usually, anything under 500,000 pages is relatively easy to beat. It depends on who your competition is."

Later he does an "exact" match, and the number of competing pages drops to 87K (though my MarketSamurai still lists 500K):

"So, if we look at an exact match search, then there's only 87,400 pages of competition, and that's very easy to beat. You could almost put up a single page and get to #1 with that."

Based on my understanding of the MarketSamurai tutorials, 87K and 500K would be too high. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I'm guessing Frank is highly skilled and is not limited to 10K-50K competitors. Or maybe I am getting the numbers wrong somewhere?

Look at the top 10 results for that keyword in the data centre local to the area you are targetting.

Investigating the onpage and offpage factors of those 10 sites will tell you if you can rank. The number of competing sites doesn't really have anything to do with getting a first page result.

Ah-ha, so it doesn't really matter how many competing websites there are, it only matters how competitive the Top 10 are. That makes sense.

I guess I should go back and re-analyze all my ideas for niches that I tossed out because they had 50k+ competing websites, lol.

thanks!
