What do I need to know before creating a membership site?

Hi all I have basic knowledge of IM from creating an affiliate site from clickbank that doesn't get too much traffic and have been thinking about creating a membership site about something I'm more passionate about.

Is there free software that is acceptable for a membership site or do I need to invest in one of a higher quality? How much time does it typically take to set up a fully functioning membership site? How do you determine the price per month or year that you first set?

Any information is appreciated, thanks!

Check out Jimmy D Browns How To Setup Your Own Membership Site in 48 Hours Or Less

No script needed. He does it though email and it has a time frame set to it. It's a pretty sweet set up and as always JDB over delivers.

It all depends on what type of membership you want to create. You might not even need any software if you are doing a fixed term membership by where your members get the lessons from you weekly/daily thru email. You would need an autoresponder to make life much easier to manage. That will cost about $19/month, though

I dont usually recommend free membership software because there's no support when you need it. I use amember software. It's $179 and the support is excellent. (amember.com)

Charge what you think it's worth. Not too cheap but not too expensive either. You can start with a $1 trial to entice people to sign up and then after 30 days or however long you choose charge the normal price.

Thanks for the fast responses! Is there a big difference in getting subscribers when you charge monthly compared to yearly?

depends on what you want the site to do. is it a site where you'll provide all/most of the content or do you want your members to interact and add content as well (social networking). They're two different models that probably require two different kinds of software.

I'm not really sure as I don't know the benefits and cons of those two, I would like to provide content but I'd also love to have the members create content. Are members less willing to join the more you depend on them to create content?
