There goes YOUR Affiliate commission!

Recently many vendors are following a method that steals the affiliate commission from their affiliates. I think some are doing this unknowingly ...

They offer an affiliate program (inhouse or hosted one). We join and get the affiliate link. This affiliate link only credits the sale if the buyer buys thru Paypal or whatever their primary payment processor is.

Here comes the tricky part ... On order page, they will add another payment processor, the sale which don't credit the affiliate.

Example: I got affiliate links where main payment processor is Paypal. On order page vendor says - 'You can buy thru Clickbank.com here.'. What is this? Don't like it!

I even updated some of my affiliate links to links who have one Payment processor. When I promote them, I'd like to get paid. What do you say?

you should click on the payment buttons and see if you are still being credited.

I have seen CB products that show a paypal link but when you click it, it takes you to the CB checkout page and you still get credit.

On the other hand, I have also seen CB vendors with paypal payment links that go straight to paypal - so I never promote those.

It is not only Paypal/clickbank combination. That is just an example. I saw 2checkout.com, element5 order links too. If it is inhouse system that every sale goes thru it no matter what PP the buyer uses, I'd happy to promote them.

Those are the most idiotic vendors on earth who never realized the Power of Affiliates.

Good vendors value affiliates more than anything else.

For most of my sites on CB, I rather lose a couple of thousands of dollars than to lose a couple of affiliates.

Affiliates are blood and soul of my CB products so I think it's stupid to piss my affiliates.

Having been into affiliate marketing for years now, I don't say this as a flippant answer, but this is just one more reason why everyone should move from the affiliate model into creating and selling their own stuff. I'm not saying to get away from affiliate marketing entirely. Just don't rely on it exclusively. Diversify. Then, once you build up some of your own products, you can be the vendor and have affiliates working for you. With your experience as an affiliate, you'll know the best practices and avoid doing ridiculous things like the OP describes. That's a vendor who's never been an affiliate, I'll bet.

Sometimes, there is a real technical problem on the vendor's side that cannot be sorted out. This may have something to do with the shopping cart. When I was a vendor, the sales amount can be tracked correctly if the buyer paid with CC, but it could not be tracked correctly if he paid by PayPal. What I did was to give a flat commission for those transactions that were paid by PayPal.

XSitePro has now added a "phone number" onto their sales page to take live orders as well. I'm sure that makes it a bit tough to credit the originally affiliate as well. I wasn't too happy about seeing that and rethought about my efforts to make valid attempt at pushing their program very hard.

        I agree 1000%!

I was promoting through commission Junction many different programs. One of them was Total Gym. Recently, I began to see a drop in the conversions.

I went to their website and to my dismay I found that they are using a "walk on video" that tells the customerto call their 800 number first.

Of course, the affiliate only gets paid if the lead you send them places their order via the shopping cart.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with this but if you offer any 800 number order option it will usually convert 2 to 3 times higher than an online order button.

So if you have any affiliate programs that has an 800 number on their sales page I would advise you to create your own sales page and then redirect people to the shopping cart instead of that vendors sales page (the one with the hundred number on it.)

Or just get rid of that affiliate program and send them a letter telling them how unscrupulous they are. There are other methods.

Check with the merchant 1st to see if they do phone tracking. Many CJ and Shareasale merchants do, not sure about CB merchants.

Unsupported payment tracking is a HUGE affiliate commission leak. Affiliates need to check their merchant sites for this and other types of leaks before promoting them.

I'm not sure how many merchants have intentional leaks for the purpose of cheating affiliates, but I DO know that lots of merchants or their tech staff are just CLUELESS and don't think things through sometimes when it comes to the affiliate sales channel.

Yep .. see what I mean ... I didn't say not to offer different payment options to the buyer, but make them go thru a final funnel where an affiliate will be credited honestly.
