Hoping someone can help me here.

I have an xmas blog that I want to reactivate. It has quite a lot of content on it but I haven't touched it for over a year.

Problem is I can't for the life of me remember the username or password I used on the admin side

Is it possible to retrieve it another way or am I gonna have to start all over again

Thanks
Kim

Presuming you kept the user name as the standard one WP gives you (that of admin) then have you tried clicking on the "send password" on the login screen?

    Try contacting the hosting support.

Have you tried the "Lost Your Password" link?

But the best bet would be to ask your hosting for
    some help.

It's on my own server (blush) I guess I'll need to ask Mike my webmaster to help me out. (I think I'm probably his worst nightmare for support).

Susanne I've tried all my usual variations of usernames but none match my email unfortunately.

Darn it I hope Mike can get me in

I do have ftp access so I'll try this thanks

I think the password will be encrypted in database. I would copy the encrypted password string from a blog where I know the password into the database of the blog where i dont know the password. This should change it to the same password as the other one.

Should take your webmaster less than 5 mins to do.

    Thanks guys

I had a brain fart and I've just managed to get in, my only problem is now that it's still on version 2.2.1. It's so out of date, it doesn't even tell me I need to update at the top.

Will I be ok just uploading the latest version of worpress over all of it, or do I need to do it in steps one update at a time. (Not sure if that makes sense)

Can you tell WP isn't my comfort zone

    Thanks

You should be able to just overwrite it with the new version. But create a backup of your database first, just in case!

    Hi Kim

You should definitely make a full file and MySQL backup before you upgrade! But otherwise the upgrade shouldn't be to difficult, providing that your theme and plugins are all compatible with the latest WordPress, the WordPress site can help you with that.

Before you upgrade make sure you deactivate all the plugins. Detailed instructions are here: Upgrading WordPress Extended WordPress Codex

I'd be delighted to help you out with this if you need any assistance - please feel free to PM me.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but on the topic of backing up your wp blog what is the easiest and most efficient way to do this?

Use this plugin... I used this little gem all the time to
update my Wordpress blog (one click upgrade) back in
the days when Wordpress required manual upgrade.

WordPress › Wordpress Automatic upgrade WordPress Plugins

After you've installed this plugin and run it, you can then
use the automatic upgrade option in the new Wordpress
to make it the latest version!

        Check out these plugins:
WordPress › Wordpress Backup WordPress Plugins
WordPress › WordPress Automatic Online Backup WordPress Plugins

I can't remember which of these I'm using. My blog gets
backup'd on a weekly basis and gets sent to my email
inbox. All done automatically. Love it.

I missed out on this, for Kim -- and she's a client -- sorry she didn't ask me!
    Sheesh!

    1. Yes -- Ben's got the bead there on what to do if you've forgotten your username and password in WP

    The fast summary is this:
-- in phpMyAdmin, find your user name in the users table. (Click browse on the users table)
you should be able to find the name, and then the encoded password.
You can easily reset the encoded password field to whatever password
you want, but then you must select "md5" (an encryption method) as the
"type" for the field. phpMyAdmin will then encode the plaintext password
you entered into the md5-encrypted version.

    2. IF YOU HAVE A WP BLOG prior to 2.8.4, you would do well to check that your blog has not been hacked. Fortunately, the primary method of attack has been one that is fairly obvious (the permalinks look very odd) -- there has been a concentrated attack on WP blogs not updated 2.8.4, as of a few weeks ago.

    3. I really like the WPUA plugin -- I've been meaning to delve into it more, since it seems to have fallen into some disuse/lack of interest since WP is supplying "auto update." But, in fact, if you look at the instructions that WP Codex provides, and what the WPUA plugin does -- WPUA appears to do, on an automated basis, everything that the Codex says to do -- which is not true of the WP automatic update feature.

    4. The likelihood that all your plugins will be fine out of the box since 2.2.1 is highly unlikely. In some cases, you may need to find replacements. The "penalty" of free software is that sometimes it's not kept up to date, or simply abandoned.

When you say "WPUA" are you talking about the WPUA.org (WordPress Users Association) membership seal??? The WPUA.org works fine and updates without issues.
