Why is everyone doing videos?

It seems like everyone wants to be on front of a camera these days lol! Seriously though, why the focus on videos? Personally I hate them, it's a lot easier to be able to cut to the chase with text instruction rather than having to listen to someone prattle on with sales talk. I can see the merit in having videos when it comes to technical instruction or something that needs to be explained through active screen shots and walk-through's but having someone sitting on a couch in their living room dispensing words of wisdom doesn't wash with me. Am I in the minority here?

Simple - everyone is telling them that video is the new greatest thing and since they're struggling with other methods, it seems like it might be the answer they've been looking for.

Give it a few months and it'll be something else - these things come in cycles.

Video was the 'in' thing about 5 years ago as well.

Videos are easy to follow for most people compared to an ebook. If you ask me, I'd prefer to read because you can search in a book but not in a long video. It would take longer. But for a lot of people, listening is much easier compared to reading..

Also, it is fresh blood as you said.. Most people think that they failed using ebooks so why not give videos a try..

Btw, I heard that softwares will be the next wave!!

When I first saw this post I was going to reply "because it works"

but to some degree you are right, who wants to hear someone prattle on with sales talk? Not many of us.... unless it's from someone you respect and you are interested in their products. Personally I don't mind videos where they cut between screencast and presenter but then again I try not to watch the sale pitch videos. Too much hype and BS to dodge as it is.

You will probably find most sale pitch videos are part of "video marketing", if that person can get you back to their site then good on them for getting you there.

We can all learn a lot from sales videos especially when you want to make your own some day.

    All the best

Yeah, because it's in and because everyone keeps saying that video marketing is just what you want.

It's like that with everything else - hollow websites, blog, marketing-only content - it's all annoying, and it won't work unless you have a message to deliver and some value to share.

because video is and probably will always be the best medium for communicating a message.

Whether one can use it correctly or not is another subject entirely.

It seems that videos have become the thing again because it creates a sense of trust being that you can see the person that is selling or giving you advice if done correctly. Plus with our want it instantly society it grabs the people who would not take the time to read a sales letter or squeeze page. Just what I think

    Yeah. I agree with winebuddy.

I love a good video. The keyword there was "good". I hate some of the half-baked videos that a lot of marketers try and throw up though.

I think a lot of people like the idea of "looking over someone's shoulder" when learning a process. I certainly find things easier to learn when they are demonstrated for me.

When it comes to sales pitches etc, or if the content is weak and pretty ropey, I agree; I am not a fan of watching some one chat away on their sofa for an hour or two. That doesn't mean I am against the use of video though.

Personally I am going to be using video a lot more in the future. I am going to be mostly using screen-cam though and delivering helpful instructional content as a way of generating traffic to my website.

That's not true and is just something people think.

Conversion rates are all about how the prospect was presold.

I have text only sites that convert at 60% and replacing with video reduces the conversion rate.

Blanket statements like "video converts better" are another reason why people blindly think they should use it.

I've been using video online in many ways for the last 10 years and I can tell you that it doesn't always improve things. You need to test these things for yourself in your niche.

Just blindly following what people say just because it seems to make sense and you don't know any better is why most people are already failing with other methods.

You don't need video to make money. You don't need blogs, social marketing or anything else - just a hungry buyer, a product and a way to put the two together.

For a lot of people - trying to use video just for the sake of it will cause them nothing but wasted time and money, when they could've kept their system simple and been making money.

Video is just another tiny part of your marketing tool bag and not necessarily right for everyone.

I'm working on what I call "The Modern Sales Page"

It will be a squeeze page with a video, a button to click to text version, then another button to view looong sales copy version.

Anything else I can add to it.....??

Oh to top it off split test everything!

Well i feel that the way IM is booking, the more scam is on and those who have actually burnt there hands, now next time they want to see some one real. I personally feel that it feels great to see a live person explaining product. Physiologically, we, as some extent can identify the truth of the person's words (regarding his product) by watching him. People want the 'common' man approach and there's nothing better way then video.

I think video is good because you can help the people who may struggle to read for whatever reason Some people just have shorter attention spans and follow videos better than actually sitting down to read. You can't go wrong with mixed formats though cause then you can try and please the majority of folks with your delivery.

Videos are easier than articles for me.

I feel they give me a little more credibility as well. It would be hard to fake what I look like consistently and how I sound (although I guess it could be done)

I use video all the time. People who hire me to consult for them always say "I feel like I know you already" That's HUGE when you need someone to trust you with a $60k wire transfer for services.

I get in front of the camera often to bridge the gap between anonymous sales letter and real guy.

Video is just another medium, like plain text or HTML or PDF or mp3. Some products are particularly well suited to one medium or another.

Personally, I prefer to read an ebook, and lack the patience to sit through hours of video where the presenter never seems to get to the point. I'm the same with TV programs that insist on repeating everything they've said every few minutes in case the audience is suffering from temporary amnesia.

However, some things work really well on video - especially when some thought has been put into keeping the message flowing and the content heavy on info and light on padding.

That's why my latest product is video only. Sure, I could have put the information in a PDF ebook, but I'm telling my methods, in my own way and the written word isn't all that good at allowing that kind of personality-driven message to shine through.

Sometimes the way you say something is as important as what you say.

Certainly people seem to love video at the moment, so that's why, I guess, so many new products are coming out on that medium, but as Andy so rightly pointed out, tastes change cyclically.

I know this is a small sample, but out of about 200 people who have bought my video course, only one has asked if there is a PDF transcript - and didn't seem all that bothered when I told him no.

Videos are THE most powerful medium for communication. That's why most adults and children spend about 40% of their lives sitting in front of a TV.

The problem with the "new age of internet video" is that it has opened it up to anyone that can talk and turn on a computer.

Because of that, we now are forced to try to find and seek out the quality content, the good stories so to speak. And obviously, when we see a bad video, we click off in a sec.

Ahhh - - but the really GOOD videos... those are worth watching.

When I do a simple 1 minute video, it may take me 30 takes to get it just right and even then I am usually not happy with it.

From the production standpoint, a good video is MUCH HARDER than a good article. It requires planning, good copywriting, a storyboard, and then good equipment.

In the end, video wins every time - IF - it is done correctly.

You are overthinking this.. learn from Gary vaynerchuk and his unscripted vidoes. That is authenticity, that is passionate, that is trust-building!!! Don't go overboard with video creation, no need to be fancy with it... Keep it simple!!!

Video is grand, some people waffle on a bit but they are great for instruction,
basically, if you can show someone some way of doing something simple, then they will be able to do it or make a business of it, kind of like duplicating.

I use video for instruction, works better and you can explain things better or show people
        a product etc..

How to video gets a lot of views on youtube

Look at a guy like Gary Vaynerchuk. Video is the best medium to spread your message. It has audio in it already and you actually see the person who talks. That's authenticity..

And you can just take a flip cam and make them...

    Video is great!

    Hi JB

I am with you on this i hate videos too it annoys the hell out of me!

What really gets me are the squeeze page type that start automatically without warning. Sometimes im online on an evening surfing the net whilst watching tv and a very loud video jumping out at me winds me up the wrong way and i leave the site straightaway.

Ive never once subscribed to a site using a video and i bet there are others that are the same as me. Just like with other things on websites we all dislike something and i am sure a webmaster cant please us all!

    kind regards

"Everyone" wants to do business in videos but not all of them succeed.

First of all you need to know what you're doing. Need to know how to get the attract someone like... yourself for instance. How to talk in a certain way the people want to stay to watch and LISTEN to all the video.

For these you need to get some expertice and not start by doing a 2 hours video... may be small things... but it depends really if you really want this.

If the business you're doing it's working you don't really need this.

That's such a massive generalisation I'm sure you don't really mean it.

I know many people that are proficient at video production but have zero interest in using it in their business. Not because they think it won't help but simply that they think using video just because you can is a complete waste of time when there are other things which definitely help your business.

Video is not 'necessary' or 'essential' it's optional.

It's not the right answer for every situation, as we've already seen in this thread - some people don't like videos and prefer to read information.

People are not all the same, and just because you/I like video - that doesn't mean our audience prefer it.

This isn't complicated - you can test it and find out whether you should be using it or not.

Philosophizing about it isn't going to change anything.
