Problem: People think confirming an aweber "subscription" will cost them money?

It just occurred to me today that in some niches people may opt-in for your aweber list and then NOT confirm because they think it will cost them money.

I just got an email asking me how much the subscription costs.

The subject line of the confirmation email is very standard ..."[firstname] Confirm your subscription". Aweber makes you use some language to let people know they have subscribed to your list. But the word "subscription" implies money, and I think this may be hurting the double-opt-in success rate.

Anyone disagree, or anyone using better language on their subject line to avoid this confusion?

I don't need that line, but ... I would imagine a subject line like below would increase confirmations:

[Firstname] your subscription to {newsletter } is Free if you confirm now

I don't have my Aweber account open at the moment but I'm sure you can change both the subject line and the text within the message.

Yes, you can change the text, but unless your text still makes it clear they are subscribing to a list, the change gets rejected.

Aweber manually reviews all changes to confirmation email subject lines.

Perhaps I will change it to:

"Your complimentary subscription" ... the word "free" sets off spam filters too much.

Clarification: Aweber manually reviews all CUSTOM subject lines. There are several pre-approved options that use the words "request for information" rather than "subscription".

My main point in starting this thread was simply to let people know that there are people who are afraid, and think we're going to charge them money for their "subscription". How they think we're going to *get* that money is beyond me, but that's the fear some people have.

AND - if you are any good at writing copy, it probably WILL cost them some money down the road!

Chris, this is an excellent observation. I had never thought of that, so thanks!
