Default RV Trip: Meet Every Single Customer In The United States

I have a crazy idea. Imagine that, me with a crazy idea.

Here it is...

I want to meet every single customer I have in the United States. I say the US because I don't think the RV will float all the way to the UK or OZ.

At the beginning of the year I'm going to embark on a road trip across the US and visit every single state. In that time, it will be my goal to try and personally meet every one of my customers that wants to meet up.

If they make a effort, I will too.

I'm doing this because I just genuinely like meeting people and I really dig adventure. The groovy thing is I'll be able to still be online the entire time via Satellite internet & iPhone, live in cool vacation rentals across the country, experience new sites, and meet like minded entrepreneurs.

Sounds like a win, win, win, win.

Now I just need some RV advice. I've never done anything like this. I'm sure there is some insider knowledge that RV'ers must know.

Hey Jason,

I've sort of wanted to do the same thing, except get a group of IM/RVers that travel together. With the technology the way it is today, why not get some campsites in Yellowstone (one of many examples), etc and do what we do?

RVs used to be for retired people, but with IM you can take your "job" with you...So why stay put if you don't have kids?

What an awesome plan.

Is your place in San Diego gonna be empty I have a wife and two kids who prefer the beach to the snow over the next few months !!

That sounds awesome. What a great way to increase customer loyalty and relationships.

I wish I could do that, but I can't bear to be away from my two kids for more than a week at a time.

Glad to see your actually really thinking strongly about doing this jason and it wasn't just one crazy idea!

Talking RV, there was a very cool one on top gear last year i think which had a 'mini' sports car under the RV and just kinda slotted in. That resolves the problem of windy roads and also going to the local shop to pick up some milk for breakfast lol, as somehow i don't think an RV would fit in the local corner shop's parking.

I see Tina & Ron quite often actually and they inspire me to hit the road each time I see them.

@Clearview ~ I'll be hitting up surf spots in Texas, Florida, and the East Coast. Plus snowboarding as many places as possible.

I think I'm just gonna give it up. It doesn't seem to make sense to pay this kind of rent while not even being here.

The plan is to just live in vacation rentals all across the country and move from town to town in the RV. Maybe some camping here and there.

Jason -

First of all buy used man. Too many people buy an RV and never use it and then sell it at a huge loss. Also think about a truck/travel trailer combo. That way you can venture into town and leave the trailer at the campgrounds. Not to mention travel trailers are a dime a dozen.

Two map out your plans so that you follow the sun and stay out of the bad winter weather.

Next assess your needs - TV, Satellite radio, bed, shower, etc. I'd go as small as possible to save on the gas and such.

Buy a GPS, etc and make sure you have enough power/outlets to run all the internet stuff you need.

Last, when you get to Texas let me know.

Tim

jason!

film it and create webisodes of the whole trip. Give killer advice in the videos and grab kick a$$ video testimonials from your customers.

package the video series as a product - and you have the trip all paid for

This is an awesome idea.

I'd heard before that you can always stay overnight in a WalMart parking lot because the founder was a big RVer. Just to be sure, I looked it up and found this:

Hope that helps!

Definitely going used. So many great deals out there right now. Tons of family's having the dreams of multiple Griswald vacations that just never happen. The RV sits in the driveway and soon the old lady is yapping at the husband to "get that damn thing out of the driveway. Just sell it already."

I've thought about the trailer with a truck but don't like the idea. More then likely I'll tow a car or Jeep behind this and use that for local transpo.

I'm hitten the south during the winter for sure.

As for the GPS, Satellite, etc... yeah that's all a must. The rig I'm looking at right now is a 36 footer. I almost am thinking I'd prefer this smaller size over a 40 some footer, but I don't know. This 36 footer only gets 8 miles to the gallon. Definitely not the cheapest way to travel.

And when I get to Texas, can't wait to see the new Cowboys stadium.

Haha... Strange.. I'm about to embark on a similar (little less lavish) type of trip. I plan on documenting the whole thing and posting to a travel blog.

You should do the same, if we're ever near each other we could meet up. I'm hoping to leave in a couple of months and I'll be starting south (AZ to FL) and weaving myself back and forth until I hit Seattle, WA... which is where I'll probably settle for a year or so.

who knows though. I'm really trying not to plan it very much more than 1 stop at a time. When I'm tired of that place, I'll move onto the next.

Same route I'm most likely to travel and also hoping to have very little plans ahead of time. Just kind of gradually move east along the southern part of the country then do the top during the warmer months.

Jason -

Hit up Craigslist and also ebay. If you check here in Texas there are a ton of greats deals on RV's that have/had hail damage that they let go away for next to nothing.

Here is why I say trailer/truck. If the engine goes in your RV your SOL but in a truck it can be fixed. Not to mention if you get a diesel truck you get a ton better gas mileage.

Not sure how big is big enough I know if it was me I'd go as small as possible to ensure better gas mileage. Also might want to test drive a few for a few weekends to see how you like them.

Good luck.

Speaking of videoing it, I wonder if you could record the whole thing, and sell it as a "cross the country surf/snowboarding" documentry to a TV network?

What a cool idea.

Sounds like one hell of a trip though. USA is huge. I couldn't even be bothered to do it over here in the UK yet. Although if we had beaches and ski resorts like our US cousins, I would be mighty tempted!

Hey Jason.

You should get a hold of Stephanie Mulac. She, her husband Greg and their two girls have been on the road for almost two years in an RV and just love it. Have worked out a lot of the bugs of being on the road. They are currently touring the Southwest area.

If you would like to contact her. PM me for her email address. I am sure she would love hearing from you.

Thanks,

John

I've been so busy lately I totally spaced the fact that I started this thread.

I want to thank everyone who has participated in any way. During the last month I've learned a whole lot about the RV world. It truly is a own niche in itself. A very cool one too, full of all kinds of experienced and enthusiastic people. I look forward to meeting more and swapping travel stories and such.

I've probably looked at about 30 RV's so far and am still a bit decisive about what to buy. I almost closed a deal today on a Monaco Diesel pusher, but am trying to be patient and make sure I get something that is super cozy.

This trip is going to be a blast, especially since we live in a world that you can actually make money on the road. We are damn lucky.

More exciting than the money on the road is the places I'll get to see. I really do want to see just about "EVERYTHING" I can in the U.S.

More exciting than the places I'll get to see are the people I'll get to meet. The people are one of the main motivators for this trip. I truly get high meeting new people. Always have.

Ideally I'll get to meet as many customers as possible on the road, and will be able to interview experts along the way.

So pumped!

Coming to a town near you soon! (Unless you live in Finland or Bulgaria or somewhere far away)

Let me know when you're in NJ.

Ya know, my original plan was to give up my house and not worry about it. The more I sit on the balcony and stare at the waves, it pains me to leave. While checking out this huge Crane bird today in the back yard I was thinking... "I have to keep this place".

So I started thinking...

Why not let a few people stay here while I was away? That way I wouldn't have to pack all my stuff, and I'd have my place waiting when my trip ended.

The new roommates would enjoy the furnished house on the beach, the marketing library and office with iMac (I doubt anyone here would care about the marketing library), pool table, tv's w/ cable and Xbox and all that stuff. a garage full of surfboards, yoga room, etc etc etc. Of course, it ain't cheap.

I've definitely have been considering options as this place is something I'd love to keep when I get back. Especially considering the wicked deal I got from the owner.

I think when it's all said and done I'll be spending quite a bit of time in Hawaii. Most likely Maui. I think I'll eventually pick up some land in Haiku or Huelo are. Just love it over there.

Yeah that's the idea, except all my customers will get the videos for free. Maybe when it's all over with I'll package it up into separate DVD's.

I got some really cool interviews lined up along the way.

I reckon I'll be in Niagra Falls area around early May-ish.

This is such a cool idea.

Be sure to check out the maximum length a RV can be for some of the State Parks you may want to visit. Some of them have 30' limits so you'd want to know that in advance.

If you get anywhere the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia I can hook you up for an overnight stay on private 17 acre retreat. It won't cost you a thing, and I'll by the booze.

No surfing though...

Yeah, some parks max out at 34 feet. The rig I'm looking at is 38 feet, although I may go with a 40 footer as well. This will definitely eliminate a lot of places I can park.

However, with all the resources on the net it's super easy to plan ahead. Make sure you hit me up when I'm in that area. Everyone will see the progress on the blog.

Peace.

Good to see another marketer in Ohio. I am in Columbus, so Hit me up it you get here J-Mo. I was also planning on hitting the road in the summer next year, so let me know how the trip goes.

I would suggest getting a copy of Big Rigs Best Bets Campground Directory. The authors have visited each park listed, and even give recommended site locations within the campground. I have been pleased with every campground we visited that was recommended by them.

Well then I definitely need to hook up with you Jason, my IM goal is to make enough to retire in upcountry Maui, which is my favorite place on the whole planet! Already have my eye on a couple of places near Haiku.

Perhaps one day soon we'll be neighbors!

Aloha
