Default Here Come Da Feds! FTC To Regulate Bloggers...

Well, we all saw it coming...

Starting December 1st, the FTC will start cracking down on bloggers doing reviews.

"The Federal Trade Commission will try to regulate blogging for the first time, requiring writers on the Web to clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products."

FTC To Regulate Blogging

This should be very interesting.

Thanks Scot.

There are already 2 long threads about this and 2 other short ones.
Maybe a mod should merge them all?

Hmmm, I looked for them, they must have scrolled down quite a bit because I didn't see anything when I posted it.

They'll get their foot in the door with this and I predict in a few years the 'Wild West' aspect of the Web will be long gone. What a complete shame. Sigh.

No worries Scot, I've done that before too. (too many times to count)

For the purpose of trying to make sure everyone gets all the info, because there are some really good points being made, here are the 2 longest and most involved threads.

But what about bloggers in other countries? If the FTC passes such kind of law then what will happen is that the bloggers will just start writing blogs on web hosts that are located offshore. Then the American law cannot be able to penalize them.

Let's be real... this isn't going to change much.

Great theory but even if the FTC were competent (which they're not)...

They can't handle a problem this big.

After all... I still get lots of spam in my email.

They'll get maybe a couple of people but my guess is the blogosphere will remain unchanged.

I was about to say the exact same thing, these obscure regulations are largely just fear mechanisms. This is a blatant freedom of speech violation that will spawn massive objection.. I don't think it will hold water.

That article is hillarious! Right in the middle of it, there's an ad that says "Unemployed Mom Makes $77/Hr", clearly an affiliate ad.

I click on it and am taken to one of those "fake news story landing pages" promoting some kind of Google Cash System garbage - the exact type of sites the FTC is cracking down on! I love it!
