I thought this was good information for marketers looking at possible international markets to get into. The U.S. isn't even on the list :-).

Even Australia is not on the list.
It may be of commercial use to those selling any cable internet related products - and target those countries with geo-targeting ppc. |

I'd expect Australia to be near the bottom of the list. East Africa has better broadband than us now.

Most of those countries have either a small population or lowish GDP per capita. The exception is Japan which is hard to market to because of the language barrier.
For a good market, it needs to have a high GDP per capita and a big population. The US is the ultimate example of this. |

Just another small reason why I live in Japan. In terms of speed.

Lowish GDP per capita??? List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Which country is low on the list? Were you thinking of Singapore? 4th in the world, higher than USA and most European countries! |

The biggest common denominator I see on that list is the small size of the countries, land mass wise. It's a lot easier to build the infrastucture on a smaller scale than in the USA or India or Australia.
Heck, it looks like if most of countries on that list ever got into a war with Rhode Island they would lose... ![]() KJ |

The list doesn't seem to be a huge suprise - Europe has been leading the way with communications for awhile - not just broadband, but also mobile phone networks (and probably wireless data, too).
Why does Australia not have better services? We're a huge country with hardly anyone in it. We're about the same size as the US, but with about a 10th of their population, which means providing services costs more per head for the net providers. cheers Sam |

I can give you some idea how these countries are using their fast internet connections
Internet Pornography Statistics 2009 - TopTenREVIEWS Internet Pornographic Revenue 1. China $27.40B 2. South Korea $25.73B 3. Japan $19.98B 4. US $13.33B 5. Australia $2.00B The Koreans spend on average $526.76 per person on Internet pornography as opposed to $44.67 for the U.S. I am not sure whether Hong Kong is included with China but a recent survey suggest that Hong Kongers spend more time on Internet pornography than anybody else. |

One site says:

[quote]Some ISPs estimate that about 5% of users consume about 50% of the total bandwidth.[quote] So they estimate that 10% use would start to degrade the entire network! MOST of these areas are SMALL! In the US, there are networks that, if not for their range, or the GREED of their "owners", would GREATLY help make most of the US a real network power. The US DOES have a lot of untapped resources. Even so, that study lists the US and russia as 16th and 17th. Oh yeah, India is HUGE, and huge areas are, obviously, not covered. Frankly I wouldn't have had it high, as a country. ANOTHER study(apparently more recent than the one I listed, though both claimed 2009) says: south korea japan hong kong sweden switzerland netherlands singapore luxembourg denmark norway malta iceland australia lithuania us ireland canada france estonia belgium Steve | |||

Yeah the top 10 countries have small area when compared to US or Australia.. Check the stats here:
List of countries and outlying territories by total area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It is be difficult to market to these countries as there would be language barrier... Apart from HongKong & Singapore I don't think English is popular in other countries (correct me if I am wrong)... Cheers, |
