Paypal shopping cart abandonment

Finally got an e-book site off the ground, and finally got decent traffic to the site.

Here's the issue: I can get people to click on the "buy now" button, but no one yet has actually purchased the book.

I've tested it myself and it works fine. I use e-junkie to help distribute the book.

It's a basic (free) Paypal account - so the page it takes you to (a) takes a while to load, and (b) immediately tries to get you to join Paypal instead of just entering your credit card info.

Are these serious sources of abandonment in the process?

If so, any recommendations for alternatives?

    Kevin,

It never hurts to explain to your prospects that they can use any credit card they want with PP and they don't need to have a PP account to buy from you.

I ended up putting a statement in bolded red to that affect and it seemed to help.

Lots of folks put a screenshot of the PP page so people don't get surprised when they first see the payment page. You could add a page to your site where you explain in detail how the buying process works.

You not only have to sell them on buying your product if you use PP, you also have to sell them on the idea of using PP for their purchase.

I have a 1-800 number for support and you wouldn't believe the amount of calls I get from folks who have had a bad experience with PP and want an alternative way to pay. (I sell physical products)

And fwiw, shopping cart abandonment can easily run in the 75%+ range. A lot of people will 'test' not only your payment system, they will also test their nerves. There is still a lot of apprehension about first time purchases from a new seller. New to the buyer, that is. Once they get used to you, eg, comfortable buying from you, this resistance goes away.

    Thanks, Joe.

What's the least jarring way to process purchases, then? I guess whatever most readily integrates into the site?

      Hi Kevin

Sorry I don't have an answer, but was interested in other people's responses as I'm just putting Paypal shopping cart in to some sites.

Anyway, as you don't have signature yet, I can';t check out your site and your e-book. Why don't you quickly add a signature to your profile with your url (that's the only place you can put it). You never know you might pick up a few sales from some Warriors .
