Default Scammed by a newspaper

I was scammed by a newspaper. I paid good money to run an ad and the ad never ran. But that didn’t stop them from taking my money. I called them twice about it, one time they claimed they never received the ad in their system, and the second time they said the ad was denied entry because the company name “wasn’t verifiable.” So even in these modern times be careful when dealing with newspapers and other offline advertising methods.

Unbelievable! Thanks for sharing your experience.

As someone who firmly believes in Internet Marketing as a primary advertising avenue, you have only reinforced my belief.

I hope you get your money back

If they can't provide you with tearsheets of your ad appearing in their paper, then your ad did not run in their paper.

If that is the case, demand a refund or demand that they actually run the ad.

I've had some ads denied for various reasons - sometimes it just depends on who's approving things that day. Sometimes they were approved the next week - other times they weren't.

However, I've never been charged before the ad runs and if they've been denied they I was either refunded or not charged. I've noticed recently in the classifieds anyway that many daily/weekly newspapers have gone to charging first and then working out the kinks later. Guess the costs of invoicing all those deadbeats has finally gotten to them.

Anyway - if they're a legit business they should refund your money or run the ad. Call your salesperson and complain! If you used a CC then of course the final option is a charge back. If you wrote a check though you may need to address it in a different matter.

good luck,
--Jack

Just call your credit card company and claim fraud.

If you didn't pay by cash or western union - there is no point to fret over it.

Tearsheets!

Ask for the tearsheets.

This is the way it works. You buy an ad, they run it, they send you the invoice along with the tearsheets.

This proves that the ad ran.

If they can't produce the tearsheets, the ad did not run.
