Spammy products with article marketing?

I am planning to do some typical article marketing with my own posts redirecting to the appropriate merchant pre-sell links. With terms of service like on Squidoo:

If our community reports you for this activity--even if your lenses and actions just SMELL spammy, you'll likely have your account deleted.

Does this apply to affiliate marketing merchant product or just classic spam junk product like berries, weight loss, etc? Can I promote legit stuff like tech related including software, web hosting, etc? Also, do these same rules apply to the large article directories including GoArticles, EasyArticles, HubPages, and ArticleBase? I am really confused if these rules only apply to spammy product or I cannot do this type of redirect linking with more legit affiliate marketing products and niches.
