I use WHOIS to look up client hosting details reasonably often, and sometimes it's hard to find a good, quick system that tells you just what you want to know without having to jump through hoops (and annoying spam word checkers). Here's the one I use: Who.is: Whois, Website, Domain Name, and IP Tools - Who.is Fast, clean, easy to use. cheers Sam (I know tonnes of people probably already know about this, but I love it when someone comes up with a site I didn't know about that does nifty little things like this) |

Sam, I've used Better Whois: The WHOIS domain search that works with all registrars. for years. The only thing I wished it had was the ability to drill down to a website if its already taken so I can see quickly if its just an adsense site or if someone is really using the site. I've gotten use to the CAPTCHA spam checkers, but do agree, I don't like having to use them. I'll check out your suggestion and compare - thanks for showing us alternatives. cheers, --Jack |

I use Whois.sc (redirects to domain tools) I also use Cogah - Domain WHOIS Scan if I sometimes want a little more/un-edited data. |

On Linux and Macs, you can also just use the whois command in a terminal window. The whois command isn't included in native Windows, but Microsoft offers a free version on the following page. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897435.aspx The benefit of the whois command over whois services on websites is speed. You just type in 'whois domainname.com' and in just a few seconds, you get either whois info if the domain is registered, or you get a message that says there was no whois information found. If you get that, the domain name is available...at least according to the server you're running whois against. Should be as accurate as any web based service. |
