If you have a new social networking site like facebook or myspace how would you go about promoting it? Also, what type of hosting is best for a site like this? Cheers |

That's a tough one, but the best idea I could come up with would be to promote the new social networking site using social media. For example, if it was a social networking site for real estate agents, then I would network with other real estate agents on different social networking sites in order to tell them about the real estate specific site. You could create videos targeting these same real estate agents, you could also have people create a number of blogs and twitter accounts that would attract real estate agents. Using PPC or other paid methods seem like they wouldn't be as effective, and they would cost you too much. That's my idea, I'll be interested to see what others say though. Daniel Pereira |

Hosting question first - because its easier to answer. You can start off with a VPS. And then move on to cloud hosting (I recommend slicehost or mosso...) How to promote: * Narrow the focus. When facebook started - it only allowed people from colleges to register. So find a narrow focus / niche. * Partner with an already existing site. Eg: you come across a very popular cycling blog. Pitch a cycling social networking site to that blog... do it together. You'll get a smaller % of the pie - but your pie will be bigger if you partner with someone already established. * Have something you can sell from Day 1 (could be premium membership options). Pump in the profits of this product into advertising the social networking site. Track the % of new visitors who end up buying the product. And then do ROI based break-even aggressive advertising. If you earn 25 cents per unique visitor - spend the entire 25 cents in getting new people to register. * Develop a strong refer-a-friend incentivized offer. * Come up with a unique angle that masses want - that no other social networking sites provides as of yet. |

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I would advertise the social networking site using social media, but I would get help by outsourcing as much as I could. For example, rather than spending $100 per day on PPC, you could outsource to 4 full time employees and train them how to do things for that same $100 per day. That I think would get you the most exposure the fastest to help grow the popularity of the new site. Daniel |
