Hi, I'm a newbie and I was wondering if you could give some advice. I've read alot that you should select a domain name that includes your keywords. When you are doing this are you just picking the best keyword phrase that suits your site or do you have to pay attention to the search volume those keywords bring in? This is the one part of SEO I don't quite understand. Does it matter how much search volume it has as long as the words you choose are in your site. Do those words have to be SEO'd in your content? I know the words will be in my site for sure but I doubt I would seo that exact phrase because it does have low search volume. They aren't a LSI 'keyword phrase' either but just 3 singular words put together. Thanks alot, Cheryl |

It depends on what kind of website you are going to create. If it's a small niche website then it's easy. You should have only a few main keywords in the small niche that you want to rank with so you can easily select that as the keyword in your domain. If its a big niche, just choose any keyword which you think you will be ranking when you are into your business. I don't think at this stage you need to worry too much about the search volumes of these keywords etc. You can easily benefit from a very competitive keyword in your domain name when you use long tail keywords which have this keyword when you write articles, post etc. |

Don't use brand names unless this is a "throw away" site good for just a few months. If you build up a following the company who's name you are using can sic lawyers on you and shut you down tomorrow. I use Quintura - visual search engine all the time - it's a fantastic tool to help find website names. Use broad match (without quote marks) and then exact match (with quote marks) to find a niche site. Take the phrase and use Google to check the count, anything less than 200,000 pages is a contender. Then look at the 1st 10 results and see if anyone is doing the same with their website names. Look for a site that has less than 200 inbound Yahoo links and you have a winner. (You can replace them with 100+ backlinks and every other day fresh, unique, content) Good luck... |

Hi, If I'm using brand name keywords in my content on my website but I don't want to use their brand name in my domain name for lega reason. Is it OK by SEO standards if I chose a broader domain name? For instance maybe my keywords would be (and this isn't my niche): sony televison sony flat screen sony plasma tvs sony flat screen televisions Instead of using a domain like sonyflatscreentelevisons.com can I just use flatscreentelevisions.com even though all my tageting keywords in my content will have Sony as a prefix? Will it hurt my domain name not to have Sony in it as I heard exact match keywords phrases in your domain are really good. In my case it would be exact I'm just leaving off the first word. I'm a newbie and want to make sure I'm doing this right. I would appreciate advice on this. Thanks, Cheryl |

If it was me, I'd keep the brand name out of it. You can check, however, with the company itself...if it has an affiliate program, they'll usually spell out what you can and cannot do. A lot of them do not want you to use their brand name, since they really can't control the contents of the website.

No, no...I was strictly talking about the domain name. With your content, get as specific as possible...brand name, model number, etc. The more specific you are, the more targeted visitors you will get. If people are searching to find out information or to purchase a product, I think that most of the time they do search by brand name and, if ready to buy, they'll put in a model number too.

My take on it is that you always want your keywords in your domain and content, but you still want your domain to reach people no matter if is a niche or a broad market. So for example if my keywords were dog and hair and my market or niche was dog grooming I wouldn't call my site doghair.com because those were my keywords. It would be something like doghairgrooming.com or groomingdoghair.com so when someone saw your domain they would know right away this is what that site is about and not skip over your site for another that is more topic focused. You can use a free tool called articlejockey.com to help you build keyword rich articles.
