Web Site For a Photographer

Hey there warriors.

I`ve been making a static wordpress based site for one client, but now I got another guy who wants me to design him a new site.
He`s a photographer and he want`s me to make him site where he will be able to post his pic`s and make some posts.

At first I thought wordpress would be the best go and I would make him custom theme with artisteer and photoshop.
But then I need to teach him how to do all the posting and all that. Which would be pretty hard for him I guess...

Maybe someone here has done something like that and could give me some ideas on how to get it done.

I just wanted to be sure I could make it happen for him before taking the job and then telling him: "Oh you know, what it did not go very well and I won`t do it..."

So warriors, any advice or a hint or something would be appreciated.

I don't know who your host is, but if you are on something like bluehost (hostmonster) this is REALLY Easy.

There are some auto-install photo programs if you have simplescripts - but I think you can get these and install manually as well:

    Coppermine

    Gallery

    Pixelpost

    Zenphoto

Piwigo (this one just popped up as new)

I installed pixelpost for a site and it has a really easy interface for the user (easier than wordpress)

Cut and paste to see example site:

    johnferrisrobben.com

There is nothing to "buy" on this site (before anyone has a hissy fit - but out of courtesy there is no actual link), and client needs to re-up some images as he was loading some that were just too big, but this is just a portfolio style. There are other templates and a support forum for this particular script.

We are selling his work on a different site, so a bigger script is needed for that.

I suggest looking at the scripts above, and then exploring template options available for them.

It's funny, I am also wondering about what platform to use to make sites for photographers so I can get some offline business. Like you Juris, I am really tempted to use Wordpress since I know my way around it very well but I don't want to do the customer an injustice if there is a better solution out there. I've been looking at Joomla which I'm told has some good gallery plugins.

I think I will go for Joomla or Wordpress though since I have Hostgator and cpanel already has a load of plug and play scripts as avenuegirl has already mentioned. I'd be interested to see if anyone else here has experience making a site like this.

Joomla! is great, but trust me it is a bigger learning curve than Wordpress. Will client be running the site and uploading or will you? When a photographer gets going, be careful because you can be sitting on a LOT of photos to upload.

That's a good point, I'll remember to ask them upfront how many photos they want uploaded, otherwise I might get buried in them! I was umming and ahhing on whether to sell the running of the site but I think I prefer giving the clients control when the site is finished and just keep in close contact to offer updates as they need them. I could quote for up to 100 uploads in the price of creating the site then offer a separate price for any over that.

Hey I found one for wordpress it`s called NextGEN.
I will probably use this one. I`ll just show my client how to upload images which isnt that hard. But I`ll definietly gonna check all the other ones!

Wow avenuegirl thanks so much. Gonna check them a little bit more later. Hmm I probably will need to install them manually because I`m gonna host the site locally in Latvia so probably no cpanel or anything
But anyways now I see that I could do it

I liked your example site. It`s flash based isnt it? I wonder if it will be possible to import the script in my own designed page... I think it will if I remember correctly I read something like that on one of those script homepages...

    Ah I can`t thank you enough =]

@YOUniversityLife yeah I would prefer wordpress too, but these will do just fine I hope so

    I agree with Avenuegirl.

I personally am using coppermine, but you might want to go with one of the other photo-based platforms that she mentions because Coppermine does not allow for blog type entries. I can't matter which one it is but I think it is gallery that allows you to Place blog entries next to the photo

I think that one might be ZenPhoto (although I haven't used it before) - they have a plugin that extends the gallery to give CRM and blog functionality.

I did one for a photographer friend of mine that uses word press and Nextgen. I think the site came out ok, but there are other more flashy photographer sites that are cooler. I guess to get the really cool ones you need to use alot of flash.
the site is ruthparbel dot com if you want to take a look.

    Great info here.

Haven't tried doing a site like these before but a webhost with Cpanel should offer something. I'd go check out the Fantastico page and there should be some pre-nstalled scripts waiting to activate. From there it would just be a matter of trial and error to see what fits the need.

I have a client that is a photographer. I used wordpress and what I did is installed a gallery and made her a editor. Dont make the person administrator as then you have to teach them to much as they dont need to do all the other functions. To teach somebody to post and do page is easy and then I take care of the admin stuff. Client is happy
