Is Hostgator The Best Option?

Hi,

I notice many people use Hostgator but I'm not sure it will work for someone that has a large amount of websites. I'm wondering who can give me advice about what would be the best hosting for someone that hosts 100+ blogs a month.

Thanks,

Craig

I use hostgator and I recommend them frequently. But for 100+ sites I would recommend a dedicated server rather than a HG reseller account. You could get one from HG, or you could probably get one a bit cheaper through the Planet. I have several dedicated servers there and have been renting servers from them since about 2003.

THanks for your reply. So how many sites could I host on a dedicated server?

There's no possible answer to that question really. It depends on how active your sites are, and how powerful the server is.

With ~100 blogs, remember that CPU and I/O will be the main bottlenecks.

Obviously you'll also need to be looking at 4 GB RAM, IMO.

But it really depends on how busy your sites are. If you could provide more info then it'd be easier to make a better recommendation (you may or may not need h/w RAID, you may need 2 GB of RAM or alternatively much, much higher, etc)

Just remember also that you'll need a fully managed solution.

That's therefore a good thing that HG's dedis are fully managed. I've never used them personally though (I lease off of VolumeDrive.com and manage them myself for the most part), but it is good that they offer fully managed services by default.

If you're going to have any type of traffic and have quite a number of sites I highly suggest a dedicated server.

I use HostGator for some of my sites, but if you need to host 100+ blogs, you will probably need a VPS or a dedicated server.

theplanet.com is one of the best companies to get a dedicated sever from.
