Default Do contests work?

I have heard of people building lists and twitter followers by offering to give something away to someone at random on their list.

If someone was giving away $20 or a cheap ipod would you optin to their list or follow them on twitter for a chance to win? I don't think I would.

What do you guys think? I am inclined to think people aren't going to waste their time. Am I wrong?

I have and would, only with my Special junk email account though, I don’t like my main email inbox full to the brim each day.

I think you have to consider the customer you are trying to attract with this. Will it be a core customer or opportunistic customer?

I've used this when I worked for a fortune 500 company with no luck. I've used it in my own rental business with no luck. I just find my time and money is better spent attracting the REAL GOOD customers instead.

This question is tricky to answer because honestly, yes, contests will work and attract people to your list/website/ or w/e you are promoting but the chance of these guys actually buying something from you or even reading your e-mail after the contest is over is slim to none :P Trust me I know, I've ran a few contests back in my newbie days. Not the best use of money IMO.

I have been considering a contest and having found this thread I would be very interested to know how others have got on with them?

I have an ongoing contest at my dog clothing site....."sign up you and a friend and win dog clothes"

It's done very well for me for sign ups to my list!

Every month I pick a winner (actually my daughter does) and the winner gets a free doggie outfit....very good for word of mouth advertising.

I think contests MAY work. Its not a given that ALL contents WILL work, SOME contests MAY work, provided there is sufficient incentive (persuasion, scarcity of the item offered, etc.). People always weigh the labor or task and time involved in return for doing something for obtaining something, whether the cost is worth the effort and the return. Its always VALUE=VALUE. value for value or the equation will break. If you are able to offer something that is of value, and of sufficient scarcity, then using something like twiveaway.com for contests and giveaways and promotions will definitely help your success lead factor ratio. The worry is how to get the word out to a sufficiently large group of people who may be interested in the promotion you are offering.
