It exploded - anyone hurt?

Is it just me or is the phrase "this company is exploding!" gotten tired and overused? I get many pitches for MLM type things and I see this over and over. Yawn. It has no power with me at all, in fact its a negative.

So is " this will be the biggest thing ever!!" Oh yeah? I've heard that many times right before the FTC locks the doors.

In the IM world I hear "This is the biggest launch ever!!" yada yada. Do I care except for social proof how many others buy? I just care if the info will be worth it to me. I don't care if everyone buys the thing.

The local car dealer: "We are having the biggest sale ever!" I don't really care. Usually they slip in somewhere that I can get a good deal on a car, but its small and hidden. They are so proud of their large sale that they think its a tailgate party and everyone wants to come.

One of my favorites is using the term "exponential growth". I've seen it used to indicate the "exploding popularity" of a product.

And I wonder - if the growth was exponential and the product has been available for a few months - how is it I've never heard of it???

Scott, one of the things I observed back in my MLM days is that explosive growth killed as many companies as shoddy products, poor tax reporting, etc.

The company hits that "exploding" stage and suddenly deliveries are late or missing, commission checks start bouncing, passports get updated, etc.

As for the car dealers, I spoke to one recently who ran one of these huge sales. He went all out, with free food, face-painting for the kids, the works. He said his big mistake was the free food. Any potential car buyer had to deal with hordes of senior citizens and young families with lots of kids looking for a free meal.

Kay, "exponential growth" depends on the exponent. If the exponent is 1, the company is treading water. Less than one, and it's actually getting smaller. Mathematically, the growth curve is still exponential...

I smile when I hear or read these "buzzwords" and then move on. It's really quite comical when you know the salesperson apes the different closes from Tom Hopkins and Brian Tracy's books. These guys probably don't even know where these closes come from and are just following orders from their bosses.

It is only tired and overused to you because it is like someone advertising a movie you've already seen several times.

Think about the person who is just signing up today for the first time to the internet. Will it work on them?

What I'd like to know is this.

Who are the people that these tactics work on?

I know in the off line world I met many of them at an MLM rally once. They
were all lunatics. Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid.

But that was over 12 years ago.

Are there still people like that?

And if so, why are none of them here? I've yet to run into a Warrior who
      buys into this stuff.

Anyway, I guess it takes all kinds but I could never understand the
mindset of those who had to jump on the "latest and greatest and hottest"
      new thing.

      Maybe I'm just getting old.

Actually, my guess is that a very high percentage of people on this forum (the possible exception being the youngest members) have been involved in one or more MLM type companies.

Many internet marketing success personal stories recall starting out in MLM.

MLM is alive and well and based on my observations there are quite a few people who are making a lot of money by promoting large numbers of hyped up MLM du jour launches.

Those jumping in on the latest and greatest, hoping they are finally in the right place at the right time are destined for failure....however, there are a group of marketers out there who appear to have a loyal following who will follow them like lemings into new launch after new launch and they are raking in the dough.

Probably at least 3 new MLMs launched while you were reading this thread.

New people are coming online every day looking for ways to make money, and because of the compensation structure they are quite likely to run into some form of MLM/Network Marketing business.
