Default Copyright on Swipefiles

I've bought a few swipefiles over time and they all have a copyright notice on them.

Considering the adverts don't belong to them, and they did not write them, how can they have copyright on them?

don't ask such reasonable questions, rezbi.

Are you the same rezbi who considered giving up (or was it not starting) copywriting because of ethical considerations -- on Michel Fortin's late great copywriting forum?

Did I actually say I'm giving up copywriting?

That's an honest question as I can't remember.

And what reason did I give exactly as I know I did say I took up copywriting as I thought copywriters are the ones with the most integrity in IM.

Also, I'd really like an answer about the copyright issue as I'm genuinely interested.

Oh yeah, I did mention my intention to go completely offline but things have taken a turn for the better for me online, so that may not happen.

However, there's still two months to go till year end... so we'll see.

So if the files are taken apart, it's not copyright protected anymore?

Also, is there a law which allows this copyright?

And, more importantly, is there a law which prevents others disregarding the copyright?

Also, I thought the original copyright owner would need to authorise the compilation.

Maybe it wasn't you. Dunno.

I didn't say you said you were giving up copywriting. I said "considering" giving up copywriting.

I was just curious if you were the same person, I didn't mean anything personal by it. (Sorry, hadn't noticed that you seem to have a copywriting-ish type url in your profile there.)

If you are the same person, and if you had some ethical concerns, that's great by me! I actually remember the person from Fortin's forum with fondness, so, if that's not you, that's okay...

Not to worry -- I didn't take offence.

I am the same person, although I just don't remember saying that.

Not saying I didn't but it did surprise me if I did as I like copywriting and have done well at it.

Not a lawyer, BUT ...

I think that is correct. The compilation is copyrighted, meaning you can't redistribute the package as it sits.

However, the individual pieces are still the copyright of the original author.

And, I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that the person who built the compilation (who shall remain nameless even though he advertises here and in emails I get regularly) did not bother to get reprint rights from the original authors or copyright holders. Who, if they felt like it, could probably sue his ass off.

That being said, you can still mine the content for ideas and rework the flow and approach concepts to fit your own need. Just don't snitch or spin the content as it is written.

Cheers,
K
