Question for software product creators

Hey all,

I have a question for software authors:

If you have a product that's just been released and could be very easily patched or cracked although you don't know it, would you appreciate being contacted by a whitehat who could point out flaws in your system, or would you try bust his n*ts because he has the gall to have a look at your software from a hack/crack perspective?

Your thoughts?

I certainly appreciate a person who showed me a problem with my software. I will try to fix it or improve it if that is in my capability.

Yeah me too. I would be happy if you could show a bug in my software.

Regardless of anything else you should be happy that someone informed you of a flaw in your product. You are now aware of a problem that needs to be fixed that you otherwise would have no clue about.

Use it as an opportunity to improve your product and make better and more secure.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.
Hopefully the person whose package has the problem will be of the same opinion as you guys.

    Actually,

You should appreciate that kind of feedback from people. I'd much rather have someone point out the security flaws of my system rather than have them be exploited by everyone and not know about it. At least you can be semi-proactive about your software security with someone with experience of those who know reverse engineering than be blind sided when your software is being shared on every warez community there is out there.

Coming from a 'cracker' background, I am already aware of the ways to bypass software security but even so, I don't know everything to get around protection so I do appreciate it when others bring knowledge to my attention. I have tested software for software owners in the past for exploits and quickly bring that to their attention so I would have to say that you shouldn't be worried about it but appreciate that this person is alerting you so you can try and thwart the exploit and save your software from being shared.

Yeah, what they said. And give him a free (legit) copy, too.

The last two weeks I've had a couple hundred registrations come in for Article Architect that are using the same bogus email address. If I were a rich guru I might not care, but every time I see one of those come in it hurts. I know not every one would have been a sale, but even a small percentage of them would have been nice.

It's rather demoralising. I can definitely sympathise with your plight. It's really a shame that a piece of software that is good gets ripped off. Although in some ways I guess you could consider it a back-handed compliment. :-)
