Default Blog it OR Tweet it :: Warrior Survey Question

Hey all...

I was just putting ducks in a row, here and came across a little dilemma. We're all pretty much going down (somewhat of) the same path to riches; and by coincidence this means doing such things as putting what we're currently doing "out there"... you know, social media... blogging, tweeting, fanning, facebooking, myspacing... blah blah...

Lotta work

(For me) Blogging has always been a pain in the butt. I've used all kinna automation and posting tools to lessen the 'burden' of frequent posting... I even developed a pretty extensive automated blog posting application that was(is) pretty heavy duty with where it gets information to post and how it posts it; (won't get into that -- not the premise, here -- and its not a plug 'cause its no longer available). Yet, even still... in order to stay away from the spammy type "reposting" label; original content is key.

Right?

Now, with all the other stuff we need to do...
- article writing
- video production
- content creation
- product creation
- graphic creation
- support systems
- ecommerce systems
- systems systems systems

.. I've always looked for a way to lessen the load... and it dawned on me... why Blog when I can just Tweet??

I mean, granted.. I've been looking for a legit reason to even open a Twitter account, (I only have one now and its like... pfft, yeah I'll get to it). The whole "this method is the best way to make $umgamillion bucks through Twitter" thing (to me has always been) just more work. I'm tryin' to "get up" from this dang computer; not sit here longer. Ya know?!

Anyway.. so I started weighing the two against each other; (even now as I'm typing this out).

Originally, blogging in the IM arena was for information dissemination, yeah? At least from my perspective, anyway. It caught on 'cause SEs seemed to like the whole "continuous content updating engine" built into blogging. Everybody started jumping all over them 'cause they were easy to pop up; maintain and the SEs loved 'em. Yeah, I get that and can't dispute it; as it still stands true.

BUT.. and here's where the ... 'hmm.. is it time to shift' dilemma comes in..

In all actuality, the SEs love blogs because the content is easy for their robots to digest. Blog content is basically broken down into (and I'm using this term loosely) machine language; meaning, its a database being updated on a regular basis. The blog engine retrieves this info from the DB and spits it out... kinna the best of both worlds... humans can consume it easily and SEbots can consume it easily. Since SEs can consume it easier than basic static content... its easier for them to index it and spit it back out.

I mean, you can just as easily get (somewhat of) the same type of effect with an RSS feed of your static content, really. Esp. if you're updating on a reg. Just not as potent due to the whole database indexing thing; which I don't wanna get into but its basically all about date and time and (again) making it easier for the SEs (who are also databases) to consume and regurgitate the content in question.

I know... verbose.. but all this comes into play here.. thanks for hangin' with me

OK.. so in comes Twitter. Doing a basic Google Search with the site: operator, (last I looked), returns over 128mil pages. This means Google is indexing Twitter pages. Simple enough.

Google's also giving Twitter a PR of 9. Alexa has it ranked at #13. Compete rank is 38 and is reported as getting referral links from Facebook and MySpace. hmmm

So, with Twitter... I get 140 characters; ok.. say 100 to factor in an URL; to relay a quick message about what I'm doing and/or up to with a link that will automatically get indexed; (which also means followed by the bots); from a PR9 site to my whatever page.. and I can do this from "anywhere" in the world and even from my mobile device? hmmm

So, all of the above factored into the equation.. why would I blog over tweeting?

What say you?

PLP,
tecHead

Blogging will allow you to post an entire message/article/whatever.

Tweeting will give you half a sentence and a link that will be shortened by a url shortening device.

The links that you get will be 'no-follow', so the "bots" will not follow (some bots still may though" and unless your url is short, it will be a bit.ly url that is actually posted.

It is best (IMHO) to make your full post on your blog and then tweet the headline pointing to that blog post. There are easy automated tools to do that so you can just keep posting to your blog and the additional tweets are automated.

I prefer blogging because you can really express what you want and get the whole message out there compared to tweet

Hi Greg

Your input is greatly appreciated.. but, this statement isn't necessarily true.

"No-Follow" links don't mean the SEs won't follow the link at all; it means the link won't pass "page rank". A common misconception.

(so, my above consideration of Twitter.com having a PR9 would be irrelevant to the equation).

Simple solution -

post to your blog and if you have the "tweet my blog" plugin, your blog post gets tweeted

All roads should end at your website. A tweet generates interest, a blog gives a bit more detail, but the reader should end up on your website for the full story.

In this my own preference is tweet the blog, blog the website ( and for blog you can substitute youtube, facebook. myspace, et all)

Do both

You cannot cover everything you need for promotion in 140 characters..

So..

Blog it, then tweet the blog post link.. job done. That's how I do it anyways

Peace

yeah, true (to all of you)... but my whole thing is to get away from blogging all together, if I can.

I mean, for the quick "hit it and quit - just setting this up to compete in a niche" style site.. whether its a continuity site or a content site.. as long as I push out an RSS feed and do a Google sitemap(xml); (and maybe even an ROR map)... what's the point of the blog? Just something else to have to do.. IMHO

Anyway thanks for the input guys... keep it comin'

Somebody might convince me I "need" a blog, yet.

Certainly do both - no reason not to?

For myself, I find it difficult to take "tweeting" at all seriously, by comparison: blogging is permanent, and is a medium you own and control yourself. What's to compare?

Currently I do both. With TweetDeck I can post to my twitter accounts (I have three, one for the dog) at the same time and post to facebook as well. So that save some time.

I also run my own blog. It does take a bit, but I write form the local paper anyway and post all of my articles up there. I try to write 500 words a day. It can be time consuming but it does keep things interesting.

I suppose in the long run its a personal choice. I have had good results with both, and it does depend on the amount of time you want to devote to each area. The only thing with twitter is its word limit and you cant add pictures or videos for that wow factor.

don't get me wrong, guys. I'm not looking to replace the content, (that would be included in the blog), with just a tweet. That would be naive, yes.

I also know that there will be times where the blogging concept will be the better delivery medium; depending on the task(s) at hand. Just, (for me - and this may not stand at all true for many others), I prefer a very "smart site". One that interacts with its visitors as much as possible... and I find that with there really being no centralized plug-in authority for WP, quick integration and/or customization is more of a pain than not.

I guess what I'm trying to do is streamline the process in which we take to push out sub-businesses. You know, get rid of the redundancy.

Seriously though... thank you for all the input

My blog posts are automatically set up to bump out a tweet. Then I can go on Twitter later and yap it up if I choose.

My Tweets are automatically set up to go to Facebook and myspace.

So, when I blog once the message is instantly pushed out to 3 places without any further work or consideration.

The messages have formatted lead in on them followed by the title of the blog post and a link.

Anyway, it all works. I have received messages from facebook peeps after I have blogged something.

The one time to set this up is WELL WORTH IT. I am lazy and can't be bothered with doing one or the other.

So the answer is blog it and tweet it.

Now that's interesting. I see you didn't post the logistics here... care to PM me with a quick "how to set that up"? If not, no hard feelings
