When I first found out about WordPress, I was building all of my sites by entering all of the html. What a long process that was in building my sites. I had to enter in note pad, save the file and then open or refresh it in my browser. Does anyone else remember those days? Today we have WordPress and so many other tools that are great for building sites. WordPress is so easy that it can be set up in 5 minutes or less. This does not include making changes to the theme or adding plugins and everything else you want to customize the WP but as far as the install, it can be set up and running in less than 5 minutes. What questions do you have about Word Press? |

5 minutes? That's like... ageas ago. Today its a matter of 30 seconds. Fill out a short form... 2 clicks. Go! And a WP membership site? Add 120 more seconds to that... ![]() -Lakshay |

If you're using Cpanel it can be installed and working in seconds.. but you gotta remember to tell it to allow search engines to index your blog in the admin panel. A few of my SEO clients have been caught out with that in the past, coming to me saying their site hasn't been indexed months after launch. |

Without Fantastico Deluxe in cpanel I probably still would not have any blogs. It was easy, 1 or 2 clicks and you're done. Mike |

Where in the control panel do you tell WP to allow search engines to index your blog... Could you (or another Warrior) please be as>>>specific>>as>>>possible. I am definitely technically challenged sometimes... I have set up a number of WP blogs and maybe I'm missing something. Also how do you set up the pinging option? Thanks in advance

I love Wordpress - even I can install it! A quick question - I remember reading somewhere that you should change the permalinks. Can someone tell me what to change them to and why please? Thanks Karen |

Karen, I usually change them to /%postname%/ . That way, your links will have your post title (and hopefully keywords) in them for SEO purposes. The default is just a number. If you have a large blog with a lot of categories, you might want to instead use: /%category%/%postname%/ |

I have a WP blog. I tried to set up another one. I filled out the info, and when I wanted to write a new post, there was no "post" to press on. My first WP was set up months ago, I still don't know how I wrote it. |

| Captain War Room Member | I agree, Wordpress is amazing. I have one website that is over 100 pages and built with Kompozer and normal HTML. If I want to make a one change on a page then I will have to change each page separately eg: add a new page to the contents But now with Wordpress that is a problem of the past, but there is one problem - the site I am talking about has over 100 pages as mentioned and now I will have to copy and paste and create each new page again if I decide to change the site over to Wordpress. Now that will be a mission |

If were not for wordpress, I would have no sites online, I wouldn't be doing this and I wouldn't be on this forum here to day. I am a total technophobe, and that is why I love wordpress. It made learning things like code and and web design so much easier, because I saw results so much faster. I love how user-friendly and accessible it is. |

I've been in, out, and all around the WordPress.org site. I think the reference was not to cpanel, to enable the blog to be indexed by Google, but in the WP admin panel. You can find it here: http:/ rdomainname.com/wp-admin/options-privacy.php Or, from the admin panel, select settings->privacy @WP installation Even the manual installation is brain-dead simple. However, people who upgrade should carefully read the instructions here: Installing WordPress WordPress Codex @Oscar D -- when you get to having a website with 100 pages, you seriously need help by using either cgi, .shtml or a high-end html editor like DreamWeaver. DW has options within it (which used to be one of the things that made it so difficult to learn, but I think they've fixed that...) to deal with issues you run into when running a large site. That said, having a "framework" like Wordpress (because WP is hardly just blogging software at this point) does make things much easier. Nothing like having a footer where you can change the copyright notice just once (though that could also be accomplished using cgi / .shtml stuff.) And, @Oscar -- you could probably find a geek like me to help you with something like that and make the transfer not only far more robust, but also far less painful. (maybe even fun ?) The manual installation, btw, is SO simple, it cheekily gives you a page that says something along the lines of "That's it! Expected something more? Sorry to disappoint!) Live JoyFully! Judy PS yah, I fix/install/upgrade wordpress blogs, too. Got a few plugin plans, as well. |

| You have to tell me how you are going from start to finish in 30 seconds. It takes me more than 30 seconds to upload the zip file and extract it. So what kind of connection do you have that allows you to upload the WP zip file and complete the install in 30 seconds?

Would like clarification on WordPress. You can use Wordpress.com for free and as a stand alone, no hosting ? Or you can use Wordpress.org if you have your own website and hosting? And WordPress Direct is not related but used on your own website with more customization of templates and you pay monthly fees? Have I got this right? |

WordPress.org - download and host yourself. Have not used WordPress Direct, but they seem to be a service for outsourcing your WordPress.org hosting and setup stuff. A wrapper if you will

I'll take the opposite view. I think WP is a big pain in the *ss. Sure, it's easy to use Fantastico and put up a basic WP blog, but once I start trying to get what I want on it, it becomes a huge "time pit". Stuff like getting Adsense to display relevant ads. Or ads that fail to display on some pages, while displaying on others. Or stores that don't fit into the theme's css. Etc etcetcetc. It is true that better, more flexible themes have been developed today than were available even last year, but I find WP to be an endless process of trial-and-error that eats up my time and seems to involve an endless learning curve, with dozens of similar but "not quite the same" plugins and all that. It's over-hyped. The real power of good tools is in simplicity, not ever-increasing complexity, which is exactly what WP presents, with it's endless mutations and "updates". Elliott |

Once my sites are built i don't need to go back to them to tweak them, here's how I do it. Have 1 or 2 themes that I've already tweaked , ads are hard coded in OR I use plugins for example wpeasy ads for displaying ads where I want them. I generally build 4 or 5 different types of sites, so i'll have a theme pre configured for each type. If I have a plugin I like that works i don't change it. mark

Once you understand wordpress well, consider trying Drupal on a site or two. You may be pleasantly surprised once you understand the basics. Sam |
