That depends on the niche, although overall Wordpress does well in the SEO stakes so does a static site if the correct SEO steps are taken. What is the objective of your site and how large will it become

Your info is too vague here. Define you model of making money first?
Are you doing article marketing? In that case use your best article at your hosted website and then create more articles for article directories pointing to your hosted website.

This is 1 method. Is this your method ?

If your web hosting has Fantastico Wordpress Blog Setup, then the scripts will be automatically installed and done automatically in seconds by few clicks. My free web hosting can do that and save me so much time. I like it very much.

Sorry guys still really a newbie. My model is to create approx a 5 page mini site focusing on 1 kw per page. I will then write articles to generate traffic.

If you do not think that the site will bet more than double that size then either platform will do. However I certainly recommend and so will anyone else that oyu pay for your own hosting. That free you from TOS from freebie sites and gives you control of the content.

      Advantages of Wordpress
      1. You can access your site and alter it from any computer anywhere because oyu do not have the route html pages on one PC.
2.Google loves Wordpress, (but there are ways to even up the leverage with html).
      3. Wordpress is predominantly thought of as a blog, but if you think outside the box it can be used for so much more. Its advantage is the fact that each piece is a component part so that you can build whatever you want.
      4. There are no cross browser issues that happen routinely with satatic html pages.

      Advantages of html static pages.
      1. There are many platforms on which they can be built and many of them are free.
      2. Wordpress is not really suitable for forums, though it can be used for membership sites but I feel that they always look sloppy and unprofessional, just my opinion.
      3. Wordpress does not handle the complex ecommerce sites well at all.

It comes down to whether or not you are more comfortable with html and css or PHP coding.

You can follow my link if you want. I have free tutorials that show you how to set it up.

These are for the complete newbie.

Wordpress will be your platform to drive traffic using the content you create. You will use this to drive your customers to you sales page.

      So,

      Step one:

      Buy a domain

      Step Two:

Set up your hosting account with your domain.

      Step three:

Get an Auto Responder that you pay for. (This is important)

You will put an opt in box on all of your blog sites as well as your sales page.

Take one step at a time and finish each one before you move on to the next.

Let me know if you need additional help.

      To your success.

I like my own site versus a shared site .

Your own site with a relevant generic name can be used for years to come .

Why build up the reputation and page rank for someone else ?

I'm trying out a hybrid setup where I have both a domainname.blogspot.com blog and the domainname.com which forwards to blogspot.

Why? Because my low end hosting package/host could get overloaded if I play my cards right and get some big traffic spikes. I also looked at domainname.wordpress.com and it seemed like a free account there is capped at 35 users. Don't get me wrong, I like wordpress and use it for several blogs.

      Ensure you have the following Plugins;

      - All in One SEO Pack
      - XML sitemaps (configure this so its indexes all your pages except author pages)
      - Google Analyticator (For analytics)
      - Easy Adsense
      - Yet Another Related Posts (allows cross linking at the bottom although you should do this anyway)
      - Sociable (or any other social bookmarking plugin)
      - WP Cache

I doubt you'll need anythign else. You wont need all those other fancy plugins that look good but are useless. These are your absolute minimum.....would love to hear from others in case Im missing anythign out!

Use your hosting account and set up your site using wordpress as your platform.

IMHO, the platform I'll use would depend on the type of site I want to create.

    Heres what you do:

Get it on wordpress, setup all your content you have written and set the posts to automatically post 1 time per week.

Write articles for ezinearticles.com (Only put a link to your site in your sig box)

Make sure your links are consistent: http://mysite.com is different than http://mysite.com/

Post an ad in craigslist.com with your site link in it (good immediate rank)

And ask me more if you'd like to know more :-)
