Default Stock Images as Avatars on WF? Seriously?

So, I was browsing the web today, as I am prone to do. As I closed a window, I noticed a familiar image in the corner. Unfortunately, I had already clicked the close button, so it was gone in a flash. I couldn't be sure, but, at a glance, it looked like the photo of a fellow warrior.

Since it was a news site I was on, I was curious to see if this warrior had made it into the news or something.

I went back to the page, and saw nothing. Figuring the image was in a rotation, I reloaded the page a few times until I saw the image again.

Sure enough. It was a fellow warrior!

With his "mom." In an ad. For something that's not his, so far as I know.

Yeah. So, near as I can tell, this warrior's image is a stock photo.

Wow.

I know we've had discussions on this, as to whether it's okay to use a stock image for your profile on EZA or your website, etc. Legalities aside, one of the risks is that of other people using the same image, diluting your credibility.

So, it's somewhat surprising to find that people may be doing this on the WF. With warriors no doubt searching through stock photo sites quite frequently, don't you think a fellow warrior might at some point notice? Even if not, if it's a stock photo, who knows where "you" might show up?

You might show up in an ad, with your "mom", endorsing a product well outside your niche...

I believe that if you are going to post a stock image as your avatar on some site, you should at least make it something that is not a person. There are millions of other images that could just as easily be used and YES, I think it does tarnish your credibility if your image gets used outside of your niche.

can you imagine someone promoting the faith and the next thing you know, that image is on the front page of some porn site. Talk about ruining the credibility!

Oh, I am aware of several Warriors who are using stock images instead of real photos of themselves! There are also Warriors who are not really who they say they are. There are Warriors who are men pretending to be women and women pretending to be men. I could name names, but I won't. I think one of the reasons is that they have been banned in the past or gotten into some kind of trouble on the forum and are coming back as someone "new."

This is me too It was a long war. No really, it's not me, but someone did ask if it was. I just liked it and used it. It goes along with the war theme. I didn't think anyone would really believe that was me however.

I can see using a stock image on a sales page would be bad, but here on a forum? I didn't think that would be a problem. I had an image of a Bugatti Veyron for a while. I hope no one thought that was really me. My mother the car?

That is bad but if its not all that flashy to add an image of something that interests you as your avatar, I see nothing wrong with that. As long as its not offensive or bad.

This is me, and Selma is my real name. Should I be worried?? Why not use your own photo? I don't get it. Unless its something like a cute cartoon or pic of a dog, but to use someone elses pic saying its you is kinda weird, or a paranoid.

I guess people do use fake names and fake images on this forum and other forums.
Recently a warrior (ex-warrior) got banned because he had opened up a new account after previously being banned under an old name.

I did not recognize the old user because it was before I joined, but I was familiar with the newer one and had even bought a few WSOs that he had and I enjoyed his posts and so on.

I felt really weird to find out that the name he was going by was not his real one, and his avatar was probably not real either. I kinda felt like I was cheated on or lied to.

It was weird to find out that the new name and so on was fake.

I've seen one of the WF ladies on a stock photo site. I'd always imagined the pic was really of her because it just looked so natural, and she just looked so normal in it. I was quite surprised to find that for a dollar I could be her too.

I hate having my picture taken so much that there aren't many about, but the one in my avatar is definitely me. It was taken before I'd even noticed the camera being produced (hence the murderous 'stunned cod' expression) while I was sitting on the floor in front of the fire in my nightie and sewing a button on one of my husband's shirts (*watches last shreds of credibility fly out of the forum window...)

Consequently, I often wonder what other 'head shots' are really doing in their avatars beyond the crop lines - Thomas Belknap always looks to me like he's lining up a shot at the pool table, and not (much ) like being the cueball

What's wrong with using a stock image if its for the public good? I agree if its just because you're paranoid or trying to hide something then for sure its wrong. But there are situations where using stock photos are warranted.

For Example, I'm using one - I'm actually 6''2' with dark hair and the ripped body of a Greek god. I just don't want to drive the ladies (and a few men) to distraction....

oh rats - I've been typing while dreaming again haven't I?

Well what if the stock image is actually of the Warrior and he decided to put it onto the stock images sites. Hmm, not likely but possible.

<< This pic is of me but stylised version. I must admit, after a bad experience, I never felt comfortable putting a proper picture of myself on the net.

I don't use my real photo because I have been on the side of so many milk cartons I can't stand my picture anymore.

OK, they weren't cartons, they were bottles. Home delivered at that.

But I still don't want my parents finding out I'm an internet marketer.

Now this might come as a surprise to most of you, but my avatar is indeed a stock photo. (Waits for cries of disbelief to subside).

I chose it `cos it fits my sig. Nothing sinister, just that.

Here's an interesting scenario:

You've been on WF for a couple or three years. Over that time you've built a following, sold a few WSO's and then went on to do fairly well on the "open market" with your products.

You're respected; your counsel is sought; everyone thinks you're an intelligent, perceptive, successful marketer.

Suddenly you're approached to present at a major live event. To make it even more cost effective it's going to be held in your town. There is a very good chance you'll be able to generate serious dollars, pounds or shekels. With minimal overhead.

So, now what happens? Do you tell the promoter you're agoraphobic, planning on having the flu or you have a prior commitment?

Of course, there is one thing you can do. Play the part Whoopie Goldberg played in "The Associate."

Stand up on the stage, revealing yourself to all as...

Just a thought.

Elmer

PS. Yes, that is me in my avatar. I do use my birth (legal) name, sans two middle names. I am a guy. If you need additional proof I'm who I say I am, meet me in Raleigh this weekend. Tackett and I are going to have a "poorest physique" contest. He'll win. He's a programmer.

It never occured to me to use a stock image for my avatar. I don't see a problem with it however. I would rather just put my own face up there though. I did wear some sunglasses for the photo I am using as I don't usualy wear those sunglasses you see in my picture. But other than that, the picture you see is me, in the flesh.

Here is a picture of my little brother too.

I just noticed that all the richest IMers used their real names and pictures...
(OK, so they have all been fined or spent time in Federal Prison, too)

Mine is definitely not stock. I can't imagine the person that would want to use it if it weren't stock... I mean, is there a market for pictures of guys with weird faces eating donuts?

[edit]
Hm. Looks broke right now...

Well, I didn't mean logos, objects, cartoons, caricatures, etc. It's just that when you have a photograph of a real person (that's not an obvious celebrity or movie character or something), I think people pretty much take that as being you.

I understand not wanting to use your own photo, but why use something other than an image unique (or mostly unique) to you? Why build a brand around an image that anyone else can use for a buck?

Dan, you look strangely like an ebook.

There are some marketers who should use stock images...

Back when Joe Kumar released his 30 days to online success book and included pictures of the contributors swiped from various places around the net...

Some of them looked like they were snap shots taken from an America's Most Wanted story, others looked like mug shots, some looked like pictures from drunken parties where the other people in the picture had been cropped out.

Grant Shapps aka Michael Green owner of the How to Forum used a stock photo for years and he never said it was him... but people just assumed it was...

The reason for the alternate identity is because he wanted to divide his online business from his offline business and career in politics. He owns a printing business and is a member of parliament:

I'm hoping the product wasn't anything distasteful otherwise they may have to do a little explaining

LOL Elmer is too much of a gentleman to pinch your bottom, but watchout for his irresistable charm and killer eyebrow raising, enough to drive any buxom blonde crazy!

<== If I was using a stock photo - I'd have picked a better one than this...

I would have probably gone for a slim blonde young thing - wishful thinking!
