With the economy the way it is I don't think its prudent for me to just jump into IM full time. I could only last 8 months or a year before I would need to be making a (modest) living, and I doubt I would be at, say, 2k/month by that time. I suppose it could happen, but I don't think its likely. So I'm thinking about taking a day job again, which will definitely cut down on my online experiments, but should give me a big financial boost. I would make enough that I could put away 2k/month, and that would come in real handy if I try IM full time again. The other benefit is I would get some savings for PPC, which right now I can't afford. Who knows, maybe I can run PPC campaigns while I work, and try to find a winning formula. Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud here, but I know this kind of decision must come up for a lot of you. I'd be interested to hear how IM to day-job transitions worked out for you. |

Well I worked at IM and building my writing business part time for just over a year before I could replace my offline income - and I'm coming up to the first anniversary of my newfound freedom! Never looked back - but started cautiously.

I replaced my offline income in one day. I decided to start freelance writing online and made more the first day than I made the week previous at my day job. Just depends how much you want to get out of the rat race.

IMO you get into IM to enjoy life. To make money and still have time left for yourself and your family. But if you can do that with an offline job then I guess that will be alright too.. If the opportunity to make a decent living is already in front of you then wouldn't it be wise to take it rather than let it slip away. IM will always be here. It's not the time of entry that matters in IM, it's how much continous effort you can give. You can enter IM now and make nothing, you can enter IM next year and make a full time living if you stick to a plan, do it everyday and don't give up until you succeed. It's not "when" to enter IM, it's "HOW"..I hope you get the point. All the best. Omar | |

Personally i agree with you to have part time offline job , so you can have more secured income, also it will help you to work free in IM , i mean to work without being tension. Also the time share you spend in the offline job witll help you in many ways as you mentioned, so i don`t think you are going to lose anything if you got offline job a long with the IM. A job is simply another stream of income and it's always good to have multiple streams of income. If you need the additional money and financial security provided by having a job, get one.

Having a full or part-time job helps you to think straight too, and it makes you value your free time more so when you do have time to spend on IM, you are more productive and focused. I am just starting out on my IM journey (although I've already had one successful business I sold a year ago) and I have been looking for a job for a few months. Doing IM during that time is not all that enjoyable when there is financial pressure on you to succeed. Anyway, I got a job offer a couple of days ago which I accepted (only 2 weeks of freedom left aargh!) and whilst I hate the thought of working for someone else (I've been self-employed most of my working life), I know that doing this will help me achieve what I want in the long term which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Especially as we're nearing Christmas which is always expensive. Like you mentioned Jay, knowing those extra funds are coming in gives you the money to do your PPC campaigns and other things. I also have savings from selling my first business and don't have to work but I don't want to blow that money I worked hard to earn so I can chill at home working on IM while it's not bringing in steady income. I really think you will thank yourself later if you pick up a job and run IM alongside it. |

Thanks everybody, there's some words of wisdom in your replies. I think the best suggestions are to look at the job as just another thing you do to keep the income stream going, and when the stream is big enough from something else like IM, you can move more into that.
