Where should I send my traffic?

Ok, so I have a created a product and a sales page for that product. I have also put a blog on the same URL as the product under /blog.

I am getting ready to begin driving traffic to my site using a variety of methods, including articles, web 2.0 properties, forum comments, blog comments, backlinks, etc.

My question is this, where should I send this traffic?

A)Sales page directly
B)Blog
C)Opt in page to receive the first chapter free
D)Other

At first I thought I would send everyone directly to the sales page, but the more I am reading it seems like a lot of people are sending their targeted clicks elsewhere. Either gathering a list, or preselling them on a blog.

Thanks for all your help, this forum is amazing.

I'd send the traffic to the opt in page to build a list, and keep multivariate testing on that page. I tend to think of the blog as a way to gather organic and social traffic which can then be directed to the opt in or offer, used to be called 'sidetracking' a few years ago.

Alternatively, you could split test an opt in page with a sales page that includes an opt in. Probably a good idea.

Internet Marketing tends to be about list building therefore first and foremost is to send traffic to the landing page where possible however on your blog I would say you should also have an opt in area on there as well as I do get alot of opt ins on my blog if you visit it you will see the opt in area is very prominent.

Thanks for the great responses! One thing about my product is the fact that it solves a pressing need that people have for just a short time. In other words, they have the problem and once they get the solution, they no longer need help, or it simply goes away in a month or so. Is list building conducive to such a target market since I only have their attention for a short time? Or should I really press the sale right away?

    Thanks.

If you only have their attention for a short time, still send them to your opt-in page.
You can then follow them up with offers for similar products.
