Default You do know that there's no such thing as "unlimited" disk-space and bandwidth, right?

Hi all

After reading around these forums quite a bit, I see a lot of people promote certain hosts solely since they offer "unlimited" disk-space and bandwidth. I can understand people promoting, say, HostGator since they are a great host (they truly are; and that's why they are so successful ), although do people here truly believe that there's such a thing as "unlimited" disk-space and bandwidth?

I'm genuinely curious to see what people think.

Or do you just go with a host since you like the thought of it (i.e. despite knowing that such a thing doesn't really exist)?

I assume the majority of people do know that unlimited hard-drives and internet connections don't exist, but I'm very interested in hearing the various opinions out there nonetheless

Regards,

Tristan Perry

Yup, I've preached that for years. The key term differentiation is "unmetered" rather than "unlimited".

I would definitely recommend that people shy away from hosting plans offering "unlimited" bandwidth and/or disk space. If you read their ToS you'll discover that in practice they can cut you off at any time for using "unreasonable" amounts of resources. How much is considered unreasonable is determined solely by the hosting company.

If you truly need an "unlimited" amount of GBs in bandwidth, then you need to pay for a plan offering, like Steven said, "unmetered" bandwidth. This is very expensive and only available with VPS or dedicated servers. Still, an unmetered 10Mbit connection will, if completely maxed out every second, give you 3,164GB bandwidth in a 30-day period - so, definitely not the same as "unlimited", which is impossible.

Of course, hard drive space is even more limited. I don't think people realize just how much content you can fit in a GB on a hard drive.

Y'know, that's true. There are physical limitations to even the web hosts' computers; in fact, that's probably why another Warrior's web host (I forget his/her name) was complaining about how much CPU power his website was using up. Plus, everybody who has cable Internet knows what happens when everybody on his block hops on the Internet at once; it gets slow. Same thing happens if enough people try to access your website at once. It's the BANDWIDTH that's getting eaten up.

I went into an auto parts store and when asked how I could be helped I said "I would like to see more" and the clerk said "more of what"?

I told him that his big billboard outside read "Everything and more"!

Then I said "would like to see what is more than everything".

Hi Tristan, if a company offers you unlimited bandwidth they have a contractual obligation to ensure you receive it, so personally I would rather go for a company that offers it, than one that tells me I have so many gigs monthly before they start charging me for each gig or my site goes offline. Unlimited disk space I have never seen a host offering that one though, so would like to see a link to take advantage of that crazy offer, lol.
