Viral List Builders: How effective are they?

Do you feel these are effective if used properly or are they simply a waste of time and effort?

Personally, I’ve had varying degrees of success with them over the years. Draw backs were of course my list becoming part of someone else’s list, and being limited to e-mailing the list only a few times a week, it was more or less shared as opposed to owned.
