Internet problesm please help

I had a friend send me an email and it screwed up my computer completely. I ran down to the store and updated my norton 360, ran a scan and removed 2 threats. Now I can't seem to get any search browsers to work. It works when I type in the url, but not when I do a search term. Is my computer still screwed up, or do I have something set wrong on Norton? I really would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Jayson

Get rid of Norton and use a better antivirus instead. Avira, AVG, Avast and Kaspersky are good ones. Also install Spybot - Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster, and clean errors and useless files with Ccleaner.

Is there anything free I can run to see if my computer is still infected? Norton says I'm fine.

Don't trust Norton. I'd uninstall it and install Avira, AVG or Avast instead... they are better antivirus, and they are free.

Also you can do a scan with Spybot - Search & Destroy or Malwarebytes without uninstalling Norton.

I'm running a scan with Malwarebytes right now.. Again. I don't understand why my search would be screwed up, but nothing else.

It's probably one of these new viruses that corrupt search engine pages to show its own results and advertising. People create these viruses to make money illegaly.

Malwarebytes didn't find anything either. This is crazy.

    Jayson,

There is so much information that we don't know it's almost impossible to give any kind of efficient diagnoses for troubleshooting.

You know, just the basics, like...what's your OS? What kind of system do you have? etc.

For a quick and dirty answer considering using Kaspersky which is totally free and one of the absolute best. Also try HiJackThis which is excellent for troubleshooting.

If you're comfortable with the DOS prompt (assuming WinXP or similar OS), type the command netstat -ano to get a snapshot of what's running on your system. You may find an internet nasty trolling around that way. Finally, if you're using XP, get a hold of "Process Explorer" to track down the path of origin for what's lurking in your system. It's 200% better than task manager because the information you get is much more comprehensive.

I know I just shot out a load of quickie answers but there's not much technical information in your post.

    Good Luck,

    Eric
