Generally I follow the trend, what people are talking about the most... then I make my search (u can use free tools like the google external tool) and verify if their is internet marketers who are ready to spent money in this niche. if yes, it is a good one.

Now search deeper to find a subniche.

Last thing today I read a thead: you can read magazines and newspaper and find good ideas (good advice)

The Google trio of...Adwords Kw Tool, Insights For Search and Search-Based Tool. Just enter your base niche/search term and you are good to go. These 3 will allow you to drill down effectively for sub-niches.

To be honest that is all you need; the Search-Based Tool in particular along with allintitle and allinurl searches for accurately checking competition .

Hey, the easiest, fastest, best overall way is to just go directly to Digital Products Retailer: Affiliate Program & Sell Online - ClickBank and browse through their marketplace. Look at what is already selling in each category.

You'll get a really good feel for what's hot and what isn't. You'll also get a feel for the general "triggers" in each niche that cause people to buy.

For example, the weight loss niche right now is all about getting a flatter stomach and a 6 pack. It's not so much about "getting thinner". The triggers are flattening the stomach.

If you're looking to sell downloadable, digital products, then there is no better way to research niches than the Clickbank marketplace.

      Good luck!

I prefer to follow a demographic as a guide to niches. I can then target that demographic with products that are likely to be related to their interests, focus on building an email list, and cross promote different products they are likely to be interested in.

For instance, if the demographic being targeted is males, 18-30 years old, I would build a number of websites with giveaways aimed at that group. They are likely to be interested in sport, education, career development, student grants, budget travel, fitness, rock concerts, building social skills, dating, etc.

Each is a niche area on its own. Even if that niche is highly competitive, because those who've received my giveaways are on a mailing list (and have overlapping interests), they can be contacted a number of times about products not specific to the niche list they originally joined.

When considering a new niche, I consider how well it fits into the network of websites that have already been assembled. I look for synergy that different niches can offer the same demographic.

I prefer to avoid "orphan" websites that are unrelated to the demographic I usually target.

For young males, I wouldn't normally consider recipes and baby care (just playing the numbers) but how to meet girls and get relationships started would be worth a look.

I agree with Brad on this one, best way to check is to see what is actually selling, tranparent market places are perfect for this.

Chris Rempel made a video showing how search engine data doesn't always determine where consumer demand is. It was very interesting, he looked specifically at the Solar Panel niche on clickbank which is huge, and the fact that there was comparatively little in the way of SE enquries.

Sometimes this demand comes from banners and forums directly, so your most reliable source of data will always be transparent marketplaces, amazon, clickbank, ebay etc.

Probably. but don't you think the person who put their CB product there already kind of exhausted their SEO of their site so they then want an affiliate to further their sales?
