Default Graphic Creation

I can't afford photoshop I'm afraid, at this stage the price tag is just out of the question, but I need to be able to create and edit decent graphics for copy writing, banners and other odds and ends.

So far I have been trying to manage with Paint and MS Word, and getting the good jobs done by freelancers, but I'm at the point now where I realize that if I need it done properly, I need to do it myself!

Is there any software which is free / affordable that would allow may to create, re size, edit and arrange website graphics?

Any tips much appreciated.
Cheers
Nathan.

gimp.org

Also, if you're interested I have a site with lots of templates you can use in gimp for like headers and ecovers, etc.

Not trying to be all spammy so I won't post the link here, but you can PM if you want some good graphics resources.

Cheers, downloading Gimp now.

I guess another thing I'll need is access to some standard stock graphics.
Any suggestions?

Cheers
Nathan.

I'd hit Ebay and look for an older version of PhotoShop.

Graphics Genie has a great WSO running right now that teaches you how to create your own mini-site graphics using PhotoShop CS2 (the latest version is CS4).

I personally prefer Paint.NET, which is also free.

Paint.Net and GIMP are good and they both can be handy for any designer.

Hey Nathan, The Gimp is a good Photoshop alternative. You may also want to take a look at Picnik a great free online image editing tool. Picnik - Photo editing the easy way, online in your browser

With Picnik you can do editing, resizing, adding text etc.to your images. I use Picnik and Google Docs to create Ebooks in PDF format,it works a treat.
