In recent times, I have noted two trends in my mailbox..... 1. More and more people are cross-promoting to build their lists - like on a daily basis..... You know what happens ? Sure - your list grows. Unfortunately, it's a shared list. Eventually, the prospect is on a multitude of different lists - and does not know what to buy any more.... BUT 2. The recent trend seems to be sending emails with "your free download link" in the subject line.... Well.... At first, being an info junkie, I fell for it. But most of these are pointing to squeeze pages.... Now I know I'm not terribly experienced yet.... But I do have some difficulty in bringing the two together. Now I know it's a ploy to get me to the squeeze page. But guess what ? Two things happen... A. I'm off your list - immediately. Especially if I want to leave and there is a "wait ! you can't leave yet" window popping up. I had to close two to get off one site just now.... B. Many marketers really send free downloads to their lists - and you are just causing their emails not to be opened. This (no. 2) is what Seth Godin was talking about when he talked about the High road and the Low road that marketers take.... And it is the kind of bull**** attitude that has the FTC all over us.... The attitude of "everything is justified if it makes more money". And it's just making it more difficult for the guys who are trying to do some decent business. If you are into this kind of practice, you may want to check: A. Your response rate and conversion rate (sales) B. Your UNSUBSCRIPTION rate. How much money you want to throw away is up to you. But you are out of my inbox. Period. PJ. |

I have noticed a growing trend of people using: "Here is your free download" or "here is the free download you requested" as their email subject line when it is not something you requested but it is simply an offer to opt in to someone else's list. Pretty soon, people will not even click to receive free downloads they actually did request. I am not a fan of this tactic. Robyn |
