Can Somone Explain More About Backlinks?

I'm not sure if this is a dumb question...but I see a lot of people talking about backlinking their articles to increase traffic.

What exactly is a backlink? and how do you go about making them?

I hope that this helps you. Say you make a post on your blog, then you make another post that has information that is relevant to the first post, you can put a link in that second post that will take the reader back to the first post. They may not have read the first post. It's best that the information you're linking to is useful and relevant.

    Well, in a nutshell....

Backlinks are link backs to your page. Like if I link to your page, that would be a backlink (If the link is not NoFollow).

Google ranks your pages according to PR (PageRank - Larry Page developed it). So, the higher the PR the better it is. The better quality backlinks you have the higher your PR will be. So, if you get a backlink from Yahoo (high PR) then you'd have a better backlink than a backlink from my site.

Usually, Article Directories have High PR. So, you get good backlinks and thus PR.

Now, Google also takes keywords into consideration. So, if your site is optimized to a certain keyword then it ranks better in Google for that keyword.

And, if you have a backlink with your keyword as Anchor Text then that's even better.

So, you write articles for backlinks and thus get high PR and rank better. Ranking better translates to higher traffic from Google. Besides, you'd get direct traffic from the article directories. This traffic is highly targeted.

Then there is No Follow and Do Follow links. No Follow means, the link doesn't count as a backlink and Do Follow means it does. All article directories are Do Follow.

Now, I am not a SEO expert but I think this is how it works.

    Sumit.

a backlink is any link aiming back at your website or blog...using an anchor text.
You can make a back link yourself and post it on other forums and websites. Or you can ask the own of a website to exchange links.
Without having good quality backlinks (with higher PR ..or Page Rank ) you won;t be able to get ranked on google. Infact without any backlinks you will not even get on google, because google looks at backlinks as a way of figuring out if your site is like enough by people to even worthy be listed in Googles indexing.
