Knucklehead Alert - This is a quick reminder

Wanted to give a heads up to anyone using their signatures in a sales page that you DON'T use your real signature.

Some people are uploading a scanned signature to their sites and this is a big NO NO.

Someone can do a WHOIS on your domain then with your signature, address name, p.o. box...they are just missing your SSN (Social Security Number for U.S.) but they can get a pretty good head start on stealing your identity.

Use a special font script for your signature.

    Thanks for the warning, I actually thought this would be a cool idea when I heard about it a few weeks ago and had a hard time to find an online service to create online signature.

    For all naive people like me - google "online signature" or use mylivesignature.com.

      Thanks for the link. I'll be sure to be more careful too in that respect. I already had my identity stolen once, stupid me. But now that I have more info I won't make a mistake twice.

      I'm not sure I understand what the question is.

      What I was trying to do is to remind people that are about to upload an exact scanned copy of their signature that they use to sign legal documents and checks with...that it is a bad idea.

      I have already been a victim of identity theft. Twice. It's not fun.

      Once many years ago someone found a license that I had lost and they were involved in traffic incident.

      I had to go to court to clear it up for something that I didn't do.

      The thing that saved me along with testimony that it wasn't me, was that the judge made me sign my name three times on a document and then compared it to the signature on the ticket.

      He saw immediately that the two were different. Dropped the case.

      Another time another incident involving a neighbor stealing checks and cashing them. Again, my signature was the only thing that saved my butt.

      If you don't think it's a knucklehead idea to put your real signature at the bottom of your site then be my guest.

      Expanding Matt's advice beyond the Internet...

      Have one "legal signature", the one you use to sign contracts, checks, etc. - legal documents.

      Have a variation you use when signing other things - sales letters, job memos, notes to people, anything other than a legal document.

      This way, if someone copies the signature from a memo at work, it's not the same as the one the bank has on file for signing checks...

      Having a real, handwritten signature, or at least the appearance of one, can help.

      Just make it different from the version you use to sign legal documents. The signature you use there should be unique to that venue.

      So, if you sign contracts with Firstname I. Lastname, you could sign other things just Firstname Lastname (no middle initial). As long as you do this consistently, if someone tries to take out a loan in your name or something, it helps prove that you did not sign the papers.
