I'm curious how others handle their 404 error pages in Wordpress. Do you monetize them, redirect them, put ads on them, apologize profusely?

I explain that the page isn't there, add a link pointed to the main page and show a search field. Ralf |

1. Provide an explanation that the page is not there. 2. Provide a path back to the home page 3. Notify me that the 404 page was loaded 4. Provide access to a site map. #1 and #2 are a must #3 I may or may not keep on any given site's 404 page, but once the site is stable and most development is done, it doesn't create much clutter in my regular notices. #4 is a good thing to do, as long as there is a site map to point to, and helps search engines find pages too.

Usually just a page linking back to some content on my blog, or a subscribe button with a free report.

I do what Scott does but add the following: Step 5: Add specific links to 'popular' areas on the site (not sales pages, but real content pages that are monetized with Adsense etc) Step 6: Put an opt-in box for a free report to thank them for their trouble - and I probably get 20 new subscribers a week per site from this little trick! |

I put a banner ad on it but I'm liking Melody's #6. I haven't made any sales from the 404 banner on my blog. :-)

[quote]A pretty weird thing to put a special offer on a wordpress blog... I will only do that on content sites or salesletter sites.[/qutoe] I don't see why. I just feel that we shouldnt leave money on the table. You may also put your newsletter opt-in form instead. Fairuz |

I usually put an opt-in or an article with adsense, depending on the kind of site. But a lot of my niche sites were up and running before I started this, I may have to go back and make sure they're all doing this! lol.

Here's how I handle my 404 error pages. It's a little bit of a different approach, maybe you guys can get some ideas off this. Hint hint, I use video.... http://custom-niche-videos.com/what-is-this-link.html Frank Bruno |
