Keyword Research - It *Can't* Be This Easy...

I know there are "advanced" (for lack of a better term) ways to do keyword research, and was wondering what exactly that entailed?

I ask b/c I'm planning my next product, and was doing so basic keyword research.

Thus far, my keyword research has consisted of:

-using Google keyword tool to get an idea of search volume
-also using said tool get an idea of competition for advertising (to see just how many people are interested in this keyword)
-typing keyword into Google to see how many results there are
-scanning the results on the first page, to see "who" my competition is (if a 'big'/widely popular site - i.e. somebody too big to compete with - comes up in the first few results, I'm not gonna try and compete with that - I'll either long-tail it some more, or go after a different base keyword)

There has to be more / better ways.

Doing some keyword research in the above fashion, I came up with a keyword that I thought would be a good idea. It gets a lot of hits, yet has relatively few results in Google (we're talking results are only maybe 3.5x the number of searches). Yet, it's got crazy competition as far as PPC goes (which I was expecting given the keyword). However, when I scan the first page, the results are pretty..."iffy". For example, a simple ezine article ranked something like #5. There were no actual products of any kind on the entire 1st page, and I was kinda surprised to see that none (that I remember) of at least the top 5 results even had the keyword in the title of the webpages themselves.

And the keyword is a very basic keyword - not long-tail or anything like that.

I'm pretty certain I didn't just stumble onto what would be an apparent "gold mine", given that there seems to be a ton of searches with few results (and what may even appear to not be very good results at that).

I'm bound to be missing the boat here somewhere - can one of y'all tell me what I'm goofing up, not doing, or possibly misinterpreting?

Thanks in advance.

Just PM me the keyword and I'm sure I can help you out... Just kidding...

The big thing is looking at the competition like you're doing... You can't always count on the search volume that Google's tool shows to be accurate either... but, there are a lot of great keywords that can still be monetized that are virtually untapped. Throw some articles/videos up and see how quickly you rank.

Hi Wiggy, Great job explaining that. That's pretty much what I do except with one other step. If I'm researching for an AdSense site I also look for 'Estimated Avg. CPC' in the Google Keyword Tool (under show/hide columns). I sort by highest to lowest and ignore anything under a dollar. You wont get anywhere near the CPC but it's a starting point.

I look at other factors when looking at the competition but you are right on point as far as the method I was taught.

I will consider the top five results on page one because that's my competition. I pay close attention to PageRank. I know, everyone is saying PR is unimportant but they are wrong. I'll also look to see if the keyword phrase is in their URL - assuming it's in mine. Another thing to pay attention to is if the top results are on the top level of the site or buried deep in there. These factors can give a pretty clear indication where you stand when it comes to competing.

All this is assuming we're working on a low maintenance niche site. If it's going to be a main site that we're going to work on daily all bets are off. Look at the competition and set a goal to dominate anyway.

  • Try keywordelite.com to have everything in one spot for you. I bought it a few days ago and so far it's been great. I suggest watching some how to videos on youtube to get the hang out it. Much much quicker than the Google kw tool.

Basically thats all there is to it.

There are hundreds of tools around that will tell you they do a lot but most of them just access google anyway.

A couple of extra things I do is post to my blog using the keyword/s and see how it ranks to check the results.

I use a pr3 blog to do this. Not to high but also not nothing.

Some other tools I use to verify are the

    Google Insights

    Google Insights for Search

    Cwire for expense on Keywords

CyberWyre Highest Paying Search Terms - Making A Living 100% Online

    Google trends to see trends

    Google Trends

I also like to check out ebay, amazon if it falls into these areas.

Hi Wiggy, google tool is ok but you have to take to many steps which takes to long. The best keyword tool I have found is Market Samurai. Not only will it give you good KW search but a whole lot more information such as number of searches, price of adword for that word and much more. I believe it is a one time charge of $97. I beleve the site is marketsamurai.com.
    Good luck
