To start, I know zero about PPC. This upcoming Friday, I've decided to set out $75 from my paycheck to put towards my IM efforts. I have 2 websites that I specifically want to promote. One is the web directory in my sig, the other is a blog in the "making money online" niche. The goal is to get some quick traffic. I'm either going to use the money to outsource article writing or run a PPC campaign on Google Adwords. Keep in mind, as I first mentioned that I know zero about PPC. The tenative plan was going to be to run the PPC campaign around the long tail keywords that I originally wanted to optimize the sites for. I did a check on Google Keyword tool and the average PPC price for the keywords was $0.05. Lots of bang for my buck, I figured (could be wrong, like I said . . . no prior PPC knowledge).

If PPC sounds like a bad idea . . . I was wondering how in the heck you go about promoting a free web directory. I really can't imagine that writing and submitting articles would be a good way to draw people in to submit their sites. I can see most other methods of IM working except for this one.

Any advice or suggestions?

Create yourself a digital info product (in the form of an ebook, membership site, or videos) about a topic you are passionate about, make yourself a professional looking website, get yourself an affiliate program for your product though clickbank or e-junkies, and start promoting the heck out of it. The real money online is creating your own products, without your own product you really can't do ppc profitably, or pay for any advertising for that matter.

Completely agree with this. Why have a site about making money online if you are still at the beginning exploration stage of how to do that yourself.

It is so much more exciting to focus on what you love.

When you create your own digital product about something you do know a lot about then you can connect with others in the same field to get that product out there and sold. Make some cash for you and your industry peers.

    Hi Of,

I think you're going to find that on Adwords the cost is going to be much higher than reported. At least it has been this way in my experience.
It can also take some time for ad approvals, landing page rating, etc.. in case you are in a rush

I believe it may be likely that the $75 will go towards your learning Adwords and not towards your conversions the first time out...
If you do go for it try and narrow your market down to a very tight niche. The broad terms will eat your budget in a very short time if not.
Also give thought to using negative keywords

But you can get swift action if planned carefully. You just want that action to be the people that are looking for what you offer and not window shoppers.

The Best of Luck to you!

To HarrisonJ, I actually already have an info product writen that I'm promoting both on my sites and on ejunkie. I'd rather promote it on my site though than on ejunkie, as I have other affiliate offers there in case my product isn't what the person is looking for. Right now my focus is traffic generation. I'm doing all of the backlink building myself (directory submission, social bookmarking, rss feeds, web 2.0). I want to make sure it's done right.

The site in my sig is pretty new, only about a month old. It was a stale domain that I wasn't doing anything with so I decided to build a web directory on it over the weekend. I thought it would be a fun little project to undertake.

The other website has been around for about 4 months, gets around 75 unique visits a day, and has 0 PR. I'm going to be working on getting it into Google top 3. I haven't really been focusing on it much until last week.

I'm not worried about building backlinks, because I plan on doing that myself. I just want some guaranteed quick traffic.

I figure article traffic depends mainly on how well the articles are written and optimized. There's no guarantee of numbers. Plus, I really don't want to spend time backlinking them so they'll perform better. At least with PPC I figured I'd get a more accurate idea of the number of views the sites will get.

The only problem with PPC is that once you stop your ads, you stop getting traffic whereas with backlinking it may take some time to get traffic but the traffic is free (well almost)....

You can try Adwords for few days with a tiny budget on long tail keywords and see the conversions.. Just make sure you do not run your ads on Google content network.. Also remember to split test your ads so that you can continuously improve them... With Adwords it is easy to blow up your budget easily so you need to be very careful....

As far as experience goes, you can check the current ads in your niche.. the top ones are well written and have high quality score.. You can write your ads on those lines to get better score...

I would also recommend article marketing and linkwheels if you want to see long term traffic at no cost...

    Good luck

I know several people who make money with PPC, pushing products they don't own. But if you've got your own product, heck might as well go for that!

Check out the PPC forum here. PPC is a great way to make sales or just learn about your market, but it's also way to loose money really quickly. I know that the best way to learn is usually just to jump in and do something...but I would suggest you soak up the PPC forum first! (Then jump in...)

PPC for that type of website you have = waste of money bad idea. There are so many directory sites out there its nuts. There are even free scripts of it now that you can go plaster one up for $10 for a domain name and some hosting. While your PPC might only be $0.05 that simply means you have no competition. However how many searches is they keyword getting a month? In some cases Google will not even list any PPC campaigns for that keyword because its search volume is so low.

I say spend some money and get trained in SEO its free traffic for life and can be added to any web site in the future after you learn it. Just my two cents

Is your article marketing traffic coming directly from the articles (through your resource box to your landing page) or is the traffic coming from the search engines because the articles got you high ranking for keywords? Maybe the different traffic converts differently.

Hi Of, actually i don't expert on the PPC too. But in my opinion, when you run PPC with targeted to people who plan to submit their websites, then they will just submit their website without look unto your ads.

Understand from what you said you know pretty well already. Personal opinion is do not do for PPC. Since you are able to do it why need to spend when you can rank on page 1. You have also got to monitor PPC. Frankly speaking go for the free method.

To lumbardi, yeah, trust me, I'm going to be covering all of my bases. . . including social bookmarking, free classified adds, angela's backlink packages, ect. ect.

Thanks guys. I suppose I should have expected the resounding article marketing vote.

I ran a PPC campaign a long time ago on the first website I ever built. I knew even less back then and targeted high competition keywords with few results. I must have easily blown through $500. That was on a membership site though.

I guess I'll go with outsourcing article writing. Hopefully one or two of them will be a winner.
