Ezines: Write Your Own Or Advertise On Others?

Do you have more success advertising on other people's ezine's or writing you own ezine w/your signature at the bottom?

I've been only writing articles and submitting to ezinearticles.com but have considered paying for advertising on others ezines as well.

Is it worth it to pay for the ads or better to continue writing my own hoping people link to my site through my signature?

    I think writing your own has more value. Make sure you are sending your readers somewhere where you can capture their details (if that's the plan).

    Some ads are worth paying for but be selective. What's your niche? Are you capturing leads at your website?

      I have an autoresponder and website set up already.
      My niche is online business, sales, and marketing.
      I have only written 11 articles (I've just started my online sales career, been offline sales for long time) and get a tiny bit of traffic from articles but the research I've done always mentions advertising on ezines before they recommend writing them. I wasn't sure if that is because it was a better option or if they just wrote about it first????
      Maybe I'll try test advertising and see what happens!

        Yes, do try advertising but set a LOW budget and use it cautiously. I get my traffic from doing a little bit of everything.

        Blogging, Bookmarking, Articles, Videos etc etc

        I just do a little bit of each day when I can. If you can provide good information then you should have no problem getting leads on your site.

        Why not bundle ALL your article into a zip file for download.

        Offer an optin to download them all as PDF's..... just an idea.

          I agree. I want to get into writing more and more. This is my first stab at online marketing and sales. It's a lot different than selling insurance to people face to face. I'm looking at writing ebooks as I accumulate and organize my stuff. I'm really not interested in rewriting what is already out there so I'm looking for my own unique piece of the pie.

          Eventually I will publish my own ebooks and viral reports but that is a little way off.

    Test buying advertising on ezines, and if it is profitable keep doing it. You need to do a lot of testing if you want to make money online.

      Mr Money Maker,

      I figured that being the author would make you credible and get more links. But, when I read stuff online I'm drawn to the ads on the side...It draws my eye away from the content sometimes.
      I guess if what you are reading is boring, you're more likely to click on side ads. A good reason to write captivating stuff.

      It is quite common to advertize in ezines (if they exist) in your niche. You can put in ezines "solo ads" and "classified ads".

        "Sponsor ads" (top, middle, bottom) and "banner ads" (in HTML ezines) are two other choices an ezine advertiser has

    Kirstin, it doesn't have to be an either/or question.

    When you write your own articles and ezines, you have more control, but you are usually working in front of a smaller audience, at least in the beginning. As your own lists grow, you may find it more profitable to focus on providing content to them.

    When you advertise in other peoples' ezines, you are in effect borrowing their lists and trying to add those people to your own.

    You should always be nurturing your lists while seeking to grow them at the same time.

    If you go with solo ads to ezine lists, you might want to try sending an advertorial as opposed to a straight sales pitch. I admit I haven't tested this in a long time, but it used to be an effective tactic when I was growing MLM prospect lists.

      I didn't think of it in terms of borrowing from other people's list. I guess I thought of it as another type of adwords style advertising.

      I like that viewpoint....I think I'll try it for a while. I've been testing ads on free classifieds to see which ones get the most attention. It's been pretty fun to advertise this way but I don't think classifieds convert as well as other routes. I'm going to look into ezine pricing today...I'll check back and post some numbers here if anyone else is interested.
