Windows 7 Officially Launches Today!!

For all of those interested and those who do not know yet Microsoft is officially launching Windows 7 today.

There has been a substantial amount of positive feedback from this operating system unlike their Vista offering (not sure what they were thinking), but it seems they got it right this time.

What are your thought on the new OS?

      Yeah,

It came out in the beta version and Microsoft allowed mom and pop shops to start OEM the OS a a week before it officially released it to the public. I have had a chance to fiddle with it for a while and I definitely on the band wagon.

I personally think that Windows 7 is the best desktop OS that Microsoft has released since XP. I have been using the beta for a few months now and am extremely impressed by the improvement in speed and functionality over problem-child Vista.

Initially I had a few issues with it, I still have some Windows 2000 servers on my network and originally Win 7 wouldn't connect to their shares (it was an authentication problem) - a big issue for me as one of them is a print server! But a subsequent update from Microsoft seems to have ironed that issue out.

As a software developer I run almost every OS known to ensure multi-platform compatibility of my designs. OSX , 3 "flavors" of LINUX and every Windows OS from 98 up (except Windows ME, some things are best left to rest!). This probably explains my whopping electric bill!

With all those choices I find myself using my Windows 7 machine as much as I do my trusty XP Pro notebook or Ubuntu Workstation (and I love my Ubuntu workstation, so that's a true complement).

For those saddled with Vista I have one piece of advice - upgrade ASAP to Windows 7! You will not regret it, I'll be upgrading my beta copy this week.

Last I heard Microsoft is going to be selling upgrades to Win 7. Unless you bought software assurance with your OS then it looks like your going to be hit up for a little extra cash. No surprise there it is Microsoft you know

I know if you purchased your computer in September, MS was giving free upgrades for Windows 7, but outside of that its pay to play.

so far I am pleased with the operating system: the interface is great, performance seems to be increased, is extremely stable on my 64-bit version but I have found several issues regarding speed and it also seems that it freezes every time he tried to delete something larger.

    Other than that I have found the improvements to be very useful and easy to use. There are several other issues which I have found, like: putting unnecessary folders on my other hard drive which I only use for data, failure to make an adequate search;

On the other hand I am very pleased with the driver support that it offers especially for my wireless network card with which I had great problems in finding adequate drivers on the windows XP 64-bit version.

Right after the installation the drivers were recognized and the card worked perfectly. It automatically offered to install the drivers for my graphic card, now the only thing that remains is to set up my web cam.

But all in all the only thing to have a grudge against it is for the system not letting my monitor to have directly set up its frequency above 60 Hz on the resolutions higher than 1024 X 768 pixels. Other than these minor issues the OS works perfectly especially for a 64 bit operating system.

    Sincerely,
    TheGodfather

      Hi TheGodfather

This may be a drivers issue, I'm currently running my Win 7 machine at 1600 x 1200 resolution at 85 Hz with no problem.

My graphics adapter is NVIDIA GeForce 6100 nForce 405.

It's not the issue with the graphics card (btw i use GeForce 9500 GT)

it's because will monitor does not support 64-bit drivers, in fact Samsung doesn't even produce 64-bit drivers for its CRT monitor's.

I avoided Vista, so I still have all PCs/notebooks running XP.

I think it's time to move on.
Next thing to get for me is a Lenovo Thinkpad with Windows 7.

Glad that Win7 got good reviews everywhere.

Tactically it was a good move that Vista sucked.
It's so much easier to make people happy now!

Now that you put it that way it does sound like a great tactic. In fact, now it looks like Microsoft actually came out as a marketing genius!

Windows 7 looks good - have been using the beta for a couple of months on a laptop. It feels a lot like Vista with a few bugs ironed out though, even if it looks different. But that's not so bad for me as I quite like my Vista setup - better than XP anyway. Surely I'm not the only one?

I may get it today, although I have had no problems with Vista. The only thing I did not like about Vista was Windows Explorer - seemed that both document folders had different files and there were folders for users etc. I preferred XP in that respect.

I have a free upgrade that came with my notebook - still I use Windows XP and VISTA. If I see more positive reviews of W7 I'll be sure to take advantage of it.

Well im on my machine downloading updates at the minuite for my vista ultimate(toshiba satellte pro model) it seems the updates have released a special pack two of vista also, dont know why but have got the install box up already and it says i have to install the speicial pack several times, making this laptop uselss until it stalled the update ,

have noticed one thing about my windows 7 system, the system is faster to boot up compared to vista, you know when vista comes on makes that noise with the windows logo you dont seem to get that with windows 7 and the screen is more relaxing on the eye,

Been using Windows 7 since they gave out the Release Candidate about 6 months ago and haven't had a problem with it once. Definitely a lot more stable than Vista and had no backward-compatibility issues with any of my software.

It's also, reportedly, a lot more resource-friendly than Vista - there are rumours out there that it works pretty good on NetBooks.

If you're still using XP, it's definitely worth upgrading.

I'm intrigued to the touch screen part.

Was in a local electronics store here playing with iphone on display. It's one thing watching it on tv..but actually using it-wow.
as for applying touch screens to everyday computing, that will take a bit of getting used to.

Can 7 be installed on a machine made for xp? my laptop cannot run vista. I heard you can upgrade an existing vista machine. That's 64 bit, whereas my machine is 32bit. (I'm sure xp is 32 bit)
    its amd sempron chip.

I might be better off just upgrading the whole machine anyway.
