need help moving my website

Hi,

My site is about ready to go live. I'm currently hosting on GoDaddy, but would like to move to HostGator before I actually start generating traffic.

I think this is something I should be asking for help with, as I want it done as quickly and painlessly as possible (If I try to do it, I'm sure I'm in for a wasted, painful day, where I should be focusing on other tasks right now).

Anyone familiar with the process and would like to help? Of course I expect this to be a chargable service.

Thanks,
-Robert

    Hi Robert

Is this a WordPress site, a Joomla site or just a static website? The procedure for moving will vary depending upon what type of site it is (WP and Joomla have an associated MySQL database that also must be moved).

Is GoDaddy your domain registrar as well as your current host? And which one of the Hostgator plans do you have?

Long story short, I can probably assist you with this. Shoot me a PM if you're interested and we'll chat more.

    Bill

I have just moveda wordpress blog to hostgator and it went easily enough.

If you upload images using the default wordpress uploader, you will find them scattered all over the place. Make sure you still have the originals on your hard drive.
There is a broken link finder plugin to locate 404's which you can google for

    good luck

Is it better with hostgator over godaddy? Do they offer better service, or are they just cheaper? and how much cheaper on comparable plans?

Do a quick search on this forum and you'll find the popular opinion on this very quickly.

Right now, my site's been with GoDaddy for about 6 weeks, has been down completely once (due to a database issue on their end) and today, pages with nothing but a few text items are taking 30 seconds to load (my internet connection is fine).

I don't have ANY traffic yet.

      I've got to switch.

You already have your hostgator account all set-up? If so....just go to the support link...open a service ticket...explain what you want to do....give them what ever info they ask for & hostgator should be able to do the rest.......for free!!

That's what I was gonna say. HG offers site moving for new customers. You'll have to give them your godaddy FTP and SQL info.

Thanks Guys. It does look pretty easy with HostGator. Simple form to fill out. I was concerned that I'd be completely down during this process, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all... Let them copy the site, I test, when all looks good I switch the DNS.

        Sounds easy enough.

Thanks again for everyone's replies on this.
