I want to give a little background as to why this question is important. Really there are two parts to it.
I'm on disability with a fixed income and this summer I developed brochitis on top of a heart condition. Several trips to the ER and some specialized tests later my savings has diminished.
I don't want to bring politics into it but the truth of the matter is that while medicare preminiums remain stable from last year, my co-pays have increased by 25%, more in some cases. I have a sneaking suspicion this is done to illustrate the rising healthcare costs and make universial health more attractive. Whether that's true or not the fact remains that my healthcare costs will likely rise by 50% next year.
I have learned a lot about how the human body, mind, and spirit works in the ten years since my 1st heart attack and especially so in the last 5 years of being on disability.
I feel like I have some valuable insights I can share and at some point monetaize that knowledge. I think a wordpress blog is a way to start that by posting articles to it and creating a product by asking people what they want.
Since my life or at least the quality of it depends on the research I do, you can be sure this won't be just rehased material mindlessly thrown up.
But here's where my problem(s) comes in.
I know the up front costs of hosting and domain name but what I don't know are the hidden or associated costs of maintaing and growing a list.
Wordpress is free but again what I don't know are the costs of plugins nor exactly which I need nor do I know how to modify the theme or the costs to have it done.
Nor do I know the costs to create a product (e-book, audio, etc).
I know you need an autoresponder and I understand aweber is the best, but I understand they have a sliding fee scale that can add up pretty quickly. Part of my difficulty is that at least for the time being I need to take it slow and can't afford to pay but a small amount out of pocket to start.
Because of disability rules I am limited to <$600 a month. What I'd like to know is estimates of the cost to achieve a steady $500-$600 a month income that is quickly scalable to $5,000+ monthly. A broad question I know.
Now to the 2nd part.
Because this is my passion and personal I have a hard time writing objectively or viewing it from a distance and just can't seem to publish anything.
If anybody that reads this has a need for quality well researched articles in the health/wellness area then I have an idea that should be benefical to both of us. I know that in the beginning until you see what and how I write and until I get a feel for what you want, then I assume your costs in time will be greater than the article's value. That is why I propose to write for free to start with and later we can agree on value.
This can be mutually benefical as you'll gain a resource and I'll achieve confidence and then later I can make enough to fund the cost of doing business. Even later we might join in a JV.
The areas that I have some knowledge and interest in are the brain, body systems, food, nutrition, supplements, prescription meds, energy medicine, spirituality,self-help, personal growth and development, etc.
Due to open heart surgery I have a mild brain impairment that makes sequencing difficult and shows up in other glitches, such as moments where spelling goes out the window. Nothing major.
As an aside when I do implement this I plan to teach to others in the disability community, locally to start. Most of us want to be productive and not totally dependent.
Ideally I'd like to work with someone who sees the mutual benefit in that last statement.
I can not lie down and quit, give up, but at the same time I can't do it alone either.
I do appreciate the time you spend reading this and I am grateful for whatever answers and advice you can give.
Thanks
-Lyn

I am sorry to hear about your condition, it sounds like you have been through so much.

I think it is great that you are looking to pull a positive out of this, and share your experience with others to help them, and make a business out of it at the same time.

Perhaps rather than focusing on a list with aweber (which I agree, is the best, and something you could explore after you have made some initial money) you could market through facebook.

You could create a group and encourage people to interact with you as well as each other. You would also have the ability to message everyone at once. This could be a powerful way for you to "get the ball rolling".

It really depends on what you need. There are plenty of free plugins out there. You may be able to get by without ever buying a plugin. Right now, I can't think of a plugin I have bought.

There are plenty of free themes too. You can probably find one that's just about what you need, without making any changes. If you do need someone to do changes for you, costs may vary. Maybe you could work out a deal with a Warrior where you write some articles in exchange for him/her modifying a theme to your liking?

It really depends on what software is already available to you. In most cases, the software you need you may already have, or it may be freely available.

An eCover may be the largest expense, either in software or outsourcing. But, again, that's an area where you may be able to swap articles for design.

Or, you could make money writing articles then use that money to get the things done that you need.

I've not done an audio book, so I'm not sure what the costs may be there.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. I would strongly recommend that you stick to methods that make passive income as much as possible, as opposed to those that require that you meet a deadline or have to provide customer service.

Depending on the method, you may not need to spend much money at all. For example, with article marketing, you don't even need a domain and website.
