Default FYI - Paypal Transaction IDs Different for Buyer and Seller

Hey Warriors...

I don't know how long this has been going on, but I thought I would share for those who are not aware.

Paypal transaction IDs are different for the Buyer and Seller when the buyer pays with their Paypal account.

The reason this is important is because I know that many sellers try and use the transaction ID to match up a sale with the correct buyer - this is not usually possible.

This has become a common issue when trying to lookup purchases through WSO Pro, which is why I noticed it.

Paypal recommends sending your own "invoice" number or using the "custom" parameter to match up transactions.

Here are a few more details on it:
Help with TransactionID's - Payment Data Transfer (PDT) - PayPal Developer Community

Anyway, just thought I would let you know in case you were wondering what was going on, too!

BTW, I will be switching WSO Pro over to using "invoice" numbers in the near future, so it will be a lot easier for WSO sellers to identify transactions, if needed.

You CAN manually search for a transaction with the transaction id a customer gives you...I do it all the time. You just go into the paypal search, search by transaction id, and it will bring up the customer transaction.

I have actually tried that, too, with no luck. (In fact, I tried that earlier today.) Paypal even says as much, that there is no way to search for a transaction id in this way if they used their Paypal account when paying.

It's not new. The transaction IDs seem to be only a process used for paypal to track transactions for buyer and seller. It's the email address I always ask for as that paypal email address makes it easy to find the transaction.

Mike,
I am surprised you just noticed this.. Wow.. I track both id with payments and built the same ability into my membership script because many will register with different email/name than what is on paypal. Why I have no idea!

But I track them both with all payments to make sure everything is correct.
