For all of you who are making e-books you should really consider to put some background in your pdf's. Why? Because it looks better and more professional. In this video I covered some basics of Word and a free PDF converter that doesn't put any watermarks.

It may look "cooler" but it doesn't look more professional. That may not be the case with other backgrounds, but with this example, it is hard to read the text against that background. If that were an eBook, I'd likely ask for a refund because there is no way I would try to read page after page of something like that.

I think it depends entirely on the market/niche. One of my clients got complaints from customers that she had included too many large colour graphics which increased download size and that printing it out was unnecessarily expensive!

Hi Dominik,

Great concept. But as Dan stated... cool doesn't
work unless it helps get the point of the content
across.

Even though it looks cool and it's a new flavour,
it may be hard for many to read.

If it were up to me, I'd use a design but only at the
sides or up top/down bottom where it does NOT
conflict with the written word.

Also... your video - I can't hear a single word my man.

I think the main point is that you should really think about more than just the words in your PDF. How it looks counts, too.

I try to give my PDFs a nice look. Readable formatting, footers (sometimes headers), clickable table of contents, a little bit of color, and a title page can go a long way to giving your words a more professional look.

I personally hate pdf's that use backgrounds. I'm not buying for the art, I'm buying for the content. I also want to be able to print just black & white.

I like it... but it kinda of funny how the products I spend the least amount of time on and that looks like crap is what make me the most money...

For example: I have a wordpress website with the default theme showing... and for some reason it converts better then the ones I spen more time on designing!..

Of course its not the make money niche... so maybe that's why?

Cool! I can see many uses for this, definitely a good find.

Yes it can be hard to read, but if you do it right it is fine.

You could always offer two downloads: The normal one and an Easy printing one.

Somebody mentioned about not buying that art crap - I think it depends in witch niche are you in.

I must agree that it's low on contrast and hard to read. Maybe it would look good to put only graphics up and down.

A nice full-bleed color cover is fine... better than fine actually.

It conveys professional touch and shows at least some effort went into producing the document with a modicum of style.

Full-bleed color page backgrounds?

Huh uh...

Harder to read, screws up printing for people and in general is better suited for "magazine" style newsletters or layouts.

My 2 cents...

I first tested this in 2007, and would suggest you put it as a background and then untick the washout, it works better.

Also, if you do this, make sure you put a simple black and white copy for people who want to print it
