I'm building a social network that will use mainly events, forums, and auctions. Plus all the other parts of social networking. So which is best for my needs, phpFox or Dolphin 7? If you have some websites on each, I would love to see them.

Thanks,
Scott

I've never even heard of phpFox; so I had to go check it out to be fair. But, it was a waste of time.

Dolphin; (I used version 6 and fell in love with it); version 7 is pegged to be the "beginning" of some wonderful things coming outta that camp. With the "Ray" apps; which are Flash(tm) so they're cross platform; I can't see any other option making any kind of sense.

Plus, there's an entire International community of avid users who are very active. The designers/programmers are very involved in the community, as well.

I can't say enough good things about Dolphin.

Guess its apparent who I recommend, huh? lol

    Hope this helps

Yes, that is very helpful. Up until I read some posts here, I never heard of Dolphin. I had only heard of phpfox. My plan is to start on something purchased and then in the future have something custom built. I'll still need customization to improve the events and add auctions. So community support is very important.

Dolphin pretty much has customization "built-in"; so, I would venture to say you're not going to out grow them no matter what your plan is.

I'm not using either, but I've read about problems with security holes in Dolphin.

I read there are some issues with Dolphin 6. I figure they worked those out in Dolphin 7.

    Hi there,

I used to use Dolphin on a site until my ISP had an accident and lost my hosting account, including the backups (funnily enough I don't do business with them any more).

    I can highly recommend Dolphin.

It's a great piece of software with lots of plugins to extend its features. You need specific services from a web host and it is best on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) rather than a shared server, but it is a very good piece of software. The community support is great and people are always developing new add-ons to it. Some of these are paid but there are many free ones too.

I looked at both a while ago and Dolphin was the hands down winner because of the community support and expandability. Basically, you can pretty much do anything you want with it and more!

    All the best

    Jason

Thanks for the replies. I'll be running on a dedicated server. I'm a long time Unix programmer. So I like to have my own server. I'm still planning stages, so I have time to wait for Dolphin 7. If that is direction I go.

I'm not happy with the events in Dolphin. How hard is it to replace it?

I like phpfox events much better. I just need an auction as well.

This is not my website or the niche I'm looking into, just an example of a good event module.
